| I think that any comment on this son should include a little history of Morrissey... Way back in the early 90's he was derided in the music press for draping himself in the English flag. This was a few years before Brit Pop and Oasis. The flag has now - slowly but surely - been taken away from the right wing (or as you poor merkins put it centralist - your left wing is still slightly right of Thatcher) and to try allow us English souls be proud of who we are. Oliver Cromwell did end the divine right of Kings but created a religious hell that is echoed with the current American climate - don't forget America was set up by people who could not cope with the religious freedom of English restoration and decided to set up a little enclave of there own, later to be legalised by the secular founding fathers. This religious country started the subjugation of the Irish people and turned the mostly catholic population in to peasants owned by the bailiffs and the sheriffs who were Protestant,. this lead to sectarian hatred and on to the Troubles. As far as I con work out Morrissey is saying he is proud of being English, from Irish stock and loves both sides of the sea, but hates how politicians use this love for their own ends. | |

| Oliver Cromwell was the leader of the Roundheads, the group that opposed King Charles I during the British Civil War (don't know if it's referred to as the English or British, but I'm pretty sure it affected Wales and Scotland). Thereafter, the monarchy that was reinstated (with the exception of Charles II and James II) were Protestant, and, by extension, anti-Catholic. Example - the English Bill of Rights (1689) - http://www.constitution.org/eng/eng_bor.htm | |

| Just to clarify, the situation in Ireland is not a war any more. Cromwell's significance is also that he massacred thousands of women and children in the Irish town of Drogheda. Cromwell represents the one-sided "protestant dominated" England that Morrissey so abhors. | |

| I'm american. So I have to admit I dont know what It's like to be Irish or British (even though I have a little of both in my blood, way back). But I still know what thiss song is all about. While I dont have the faintest clue who Oliver Cromwell is.... I know who George W. Bush is... ANd Im not always proud of being an american. So i think i get it. | |

| I can only agree with harperdc on this. I love it cos of my background: English and Irish straight down the middle and I love both sides. That seems to be something a lot of Americans find hard to understand. And please don't bang on about English perfidy towards the Irish et al...not with your own blood-soaked history ta very much... This is about unity..reclaiming the flag from racists...pride not bitterness in our joint history. I don't agree with all of Morrissey's politics but his music is as consistent as ever. Can't think too much about the Smiths...makes me feel too old. | |
