Subject: JACK THE RIPPER by Morrissey

Jack The Ripper
(Morrissey/Boz Boorer)

I'm taking this song off of the "World of Morrissey" CD, which means I'm
transcribing a live version of this song. It's a pretty neat song indeed in
my humble opinion.

Before I do anything, the guitar for the chorus section (the "crash into my
arms" part) is:

A E D E A

E ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|
B -6~---6--7-9-6~-|--6-6-6--7-9--6~-|--6--7-9-6~--|-9-9-9--7--6----|
G ----------------|-----------------|-------------|-------------7~-|
D ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|
A ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|
E ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|

A E D E F5 F#m

E ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|
B -6~---6--7-9-6~-|--6-6-6--7-9--6~-|--6--7-9-6~--|-9-9-9--10--11--|
G ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|
D ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|
A ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|
E ----------------|-----------------|-------------|----------------|

The other important part that is featured in this song is that eerie guitar
part which starts from a high-pitched note down (you know what I mean). I
believe it's just (on the high E string):

E -18-18-17--/////(all the way down to the second fret)///----|
B ------------------------------------------------------------|
G ------------------------------------------------------------|
D ------------------------------------------------------------|
A ------------------------------------------------------------|
E ------------------------------------------------------------|

The lyrics and chords for the song is as follows:

Intro: F#m D Bm (4x)

F#m D Bm
Oh, you look so tired
F#m D Bm
Mouth is slack and wide
F#m D Bm
Ill-housed and ill-advised
F#m D Bm A
Your face is as mean as your life has been

E D
Crash into my arms
E A
I want you
E D
You don't agree but you don't refuse
E - F5
I know you

F#m D Bm
And I know a place
F#m D Bm
Where no one is likely to pass
F#m D Bm
Oh, you don't care if it's late
F#m D Bm
And you don't care if you're lost
F#m D Bm
And, oh, you look so tired
F#m D Bm
But tonight you presume too much
F#m D Bm
Too much, too much
F#m
And if it's the last thing I ever do
D Bm A
I'm gonna get you

E D
Crash into my arms
E A
I want you
E D
You don't agree but you don't refuse
E - F5
I know you

Break: F#m

F#m D Bm (4x)
A E D E (2x)

Yes, I agree, the studio version is better. Not just for the added part, but for the way it sounds. He sings it in such a velvety seductive voice (which you can't quite do in live performance) that it makes the song ever more chilling. And I think My Chemical Romance have totally ruined the song. They thihk that if it's from the POV of a serial killer, you must shout and scream as much as you can, and that that wil make it sound Goth or scary. Quite the opposite!

I can't stand MCR for what they did to this wonderful song. Some bands have NO business covering legendary bands tunes. F MCR right in the A!

My Chemical Romance covered/murdered this song? What an appallingly bad band. Either way, it is a good song.

I have yet to hear the covers. But I do think the studio version is better. I love the added end, which goes: And no one knows a thing about my life I can come and go as I please And if I want to, I can stay Oh, or if I want to, I can leave Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Oh, oh Nobody knows me Oh, oh Nobody knows me Oh, oh Nobody knows me Oh

I think the song could be interpreted as being from the perspective of the serial killer. The ripper could be speaking directly to the prostitutes and then in the studio version’s third verse (which is a b-side to Certain People I Know) he is reflecting on the pros and cons of being an outsider, something Morrissey knows a thing or two about.

Maybe I should point out also that I think the song is more about being the outsider, not able to express themselves, trying to pursue someone they are interested in.

okay anyway mcr, really should NOT be covering morrissey when they suck at their own songs as it is.

I definitely think it is Morrissey relating to the outsider. You hear this song and it almost sounds appealing to have no one know who you are. I know I get sick of trying to get people to understand me because they just won't.

I love this song. Colin Meloy's (The Decemberists) cover of this rules so hard.

One of my favourite Morrissey songs. You should try and get hold of the studio version of this too. It's quite rare, though. Nice to see that MCR are showcasing this song to the masses - not. They absolutely murdered a beautiful song.

i like both versions, the MCR one and this one, though this one is better i dont think MCR ruined it, they arent trying to make it gothic or scary they are just making it their own, theres no point in covering a song if it sounds exactly the same as the orignional

MCR covered this song? Hell no!!!! I've not heard their version but I bet its terrible. This song is amazing though. I think instead of being from the perspective of Jack The Ripper, it may be from a policeman who is trying to catch the killer. I have heard that policemen dressed up as woman to try and catch him. But I think either way the lines fit in. Great song.

When Morrissey says, "I love/The romance of crime" he is telling the truth. He told of Kray Brothers (The Last of the Famous International Playboys) Hector (First of the Gang to Die) and others both in his past and his present work. The first verse is clearly alluded to Jack the Ripper, a despicable man in appearance.
