for those of you confused by yin, i'm sure it's reference is for the context of yin & yang... and the definition of yin: n : the dark negative feminine principle in Chinese dualistic cosmology; "the interaction of yin and yang maintains the harmony of the universe"

First of all, the title of this song has a lot to do with the Tree of Life, found in the Kabbalah. The tree of life is intwined in many of Mudvayne's songs, including many on LD50. Mercy and Severity are 2 of the 3 pillars of the tree of life. The pillar of mercy containts the sefira of Chesed, which is Mercy and the pillar of severity contains the sefira of geburah. For more information on the tree of life google it, there are volumes upon volumes of it. Now for the song. I agree with gabelogan that the song is about creation, it is about REcreation. " Mine the souls From their casts Pour form and reshape," may be proof of this. It is saying to mine the souls from their casts (mold, forms, plaster, metal, then to melt it down, pour it into a new mold, therefor reshaping. This in turn also has a connection to Mudvayne's song Solve Et Coagula, Latin for Dissolve and soldify, interesting, no? The Yin part is pretty hard to explain.. There are many analogies to the 3 pillars (severity, equilibrium and mercy in that order) Toaist concepts of this include Yin, toa and yang Christian concepts include The Holy Spirit, Father and son Aspects of Goddess (Crone, Mother, Maiden) So saying the eye of Yin's severity is like saying your holy spirit or something of that sort. This is just all my opinion and what I have gathered from doing loads of research on Mudvayne songs

i mostly agree with 'and how' about this song. this is my favourite mudvayne song. but something that hasnt been mentioned yet. i think when they say 'mother of creation' and 'mother of distruction' they are talking about the same thing like say they were on about god, god created the world, he created us, but now we are distoying ourselves therefore his own creation is its own distruction so he being the creator and the distructor. they are on about a different type of religion though like paganism or something but god is the best way i can think of to discribe it

This is to answer lauren88's question. This is a very simple metaphor (or simile, i'm English challenged) for a very, very complex question. You have to back track to the beginning of the verse. The dark womb that wraps and covets is what is called the veil of consciousness..it is what prevents us from knowing the meaning of life, why we're her, and all of these questions from birth. It is what enables us to grow spiritually. This is why it alters understanding. When you realize that you have this obstacle, you can overcome it. They way to do this is to listen to your spirit guides (who take you on their wings). The lightning flashes of insight refer to the idea that enlightenment is not a permanent state, but a series of revelations that compile over time, like flashes of brilliance as we stumble through our ignorance. That being said, the rest should be easy. Pain of division refers to the separation we all received from our creator. We all focus so much on why we were put here. Vayne is telling us not to concentrate on that, but rather concentrate on the real question of how we get back. That is why we are here, to get back. I hope that helped. It could have no relevance to you, but I thought I'd try anyways.

SOmeone mentioned it, So i'll tell you. firmament is a Middle English word for the Heavens (the expanse of space that seems to be over the earth like a dome - Many religions say that The Oversoul Deity lives here). -------------------------------------------------------------- The Difference between the two Extremes is a theme here. The mother of creation is described then "Pour firmament between our waters: Seperate the space" You are describng heaven (happiness) between the two extremes (this is refering to equilibrium between the two extremes [equilibrium being the middle pillar]). Then the mother of destruction is described. The creation mother embraces the souls (is Merciful), and the destructive one mines the souls (is Severe in nature). "Pain of division is nothing, Joy of dissolution is everything" Pain in the division of the System. Severity and Mercy. Two ways to do the same thing. They say it is nothing. But the Joy of the dissolution of the system is everything. This is the part your supposed to debate. Do they beleive in equilibrium? or Do they beleive in the system at all?

Here's my take. I don't have quite the Mudvayne background, but this and Shadow of a Man are my favorites on this album. I think the song is talking about being rescued from a dark world. In the beginning the world was good, and then turned evil ("We've come here, from so far away"). People in the world have to deal with this massive evil influence ("This dark womb [the world], Wraps and covets me...") Several lines of the lyrics are from the point of view of an outside greater power offering to take people to a better place. ("I can save you, If you leave it all behind ") Notice that "if you leave it all behind" means that it is not easy to give up the evil. Likewise: "Would you take a trip with me On the back of a star". The last chunk of the lyrics are from the point of view of a a person in the world: "Mother of creation wait, Embrace the souls Of a lost world [us] Carry them away," is the speaker asking to be saved and not left behind. "Pour firmament between our waters. Seperate the space " asks to put the heavens between the speaker and the evil world, to be seperated. If its not terribly obvious, this interpretation lends itself to a strong Christian theme.(and possibly other religions with concepts of salvation, i'm not a scholar) "Mother of destruction wait with a belt of Skulls strap" would refer to the 'Angel of Death' dealing the severe justice to the evil world. Thus, given the "Mother of Creation" which could save you [mercy], and "Mother of Destruction" who deals just punishment [severity], the song seems to fit. That or I'm full of crap. Thoughts?
