| Actually, this song struck me as having religious meaning as well, but from the other direction. To me, it sounds like the singer is angry with God and venting at him in the song. "Your golden lies feed my role." He feels that God has promised him things and has told him lies that he realizes will never be. "Who's returned from the dead? Who remains?" Possibly a reference to Jesus? Not sure though. "You know i don't want you and I never did. I don't want you and i never will." The singer utterly rejects the concept of God and all he stands for. "You wanted for more than i was worth." Religion expects humans to strive for perfection, even though by nature and as finite creatures it's an obvious impossibility. "And you think i was scared, and you needed proof." God likes to use fear to cause humans to submit (think Old Testament here). Just my thoughts; feel free to disagree. | |

| Well, in fact i always understood it similar to you all, but focussed on society. "golden skies" and "space race" just seem to me to mean the ideals society tries to dictate on us, but he doesn`t want that but at the same time feels "not worth", which shows, that society already fucked up with him..... well might be this, might be something compleatly else - I just find it intresting, how everybody here finds basically similar explanatories, but which always seem to be according to the situation of the writer.... kinda shows how subjective all those interpreting is.... *smile* | |

| i think itrs about war. Aftre it is over and all lkife befoer it has been forgotten. maybe he survived or is some kind of ghost under the golden sun. talking about the tkme of the war and what the army/society required of him. he did not love them enough to die for. Or something like that, probably wrong tho and anyway has many many meanings | |

| I will have to agree on what Ferahgo said. I definately think Matt is venting at God here. It's actually pretty obvious for people who know God. And that's why I think some people get so frustrated about Christians thinking that songs are about Faith; one thing that non-believers (sorry for this odd term) should not forget: interpretation most of the times are based on one's personality. So, if you're heart is full of God's spirit, then you will recognize this in - let's say - lyrics. Even though a band didn't intend to write about God or anything religion related. Like, some people who just lost their gf/bf might interpret this as a 'lovesong'. Thanks for reading my rant. What Ferahgo said: feel free to disagree! | |
