Harvest Moon - Neil Young
Tabbed by Bill Brown (brownw@cs.uregina.ca)
1993.11.07
I was lucky enough to have a video tape ready for taping when Neil
did this one on SNL (Nov 6/93 [rebroadcast]) The camera work was
great. The only chords I could not see for certain was the Em and
A for the chorus, but I'm pretty sure that's what they are.
Chords
Low E is tuned down to D.
B = beat
h = harmonic
v = strum down
^ = strum up
I don't know the proper name for some of these strange
chords, so I'll just tab the different parts.
Part 1 - intro
e -----------------------------09-09-09---09-09-09----|
B ------10---12-12-12-12-------10-10-10---10-10-10----|
G ------11---11-11-11-11-------11-11-11---11-11-11----|
D ------12---12-12-12-12------------------------------|
A ----------------------------------------------------|
D --0----------------------0--------------------------|
B B B B B B B B B
v v ^ v ^ v ^ v ^ ^ v ^
Part 2 - harmonics part
e------h12-----------------|
B----------h12-------------|
G--------------h12---------|
D----------------h12-------|
A------------------h07-----|
D--------------------------|
Last 3 play as triplet.
Part 3 - D A Em ? progression
e---------2-2-2-2-2--2-----------2---2-2-2-----|
B---------3-3-3-3-3--3---2-------2---2-2-2-----|
G---------2-2-2-2-2--2---2-------2---2-2-2-----|
D------------------------2---2---4-------------|
A----------------------------2---5-------------|
D----0-----------------------------------------|
B B B B B B B B B
v ^ v ^ v ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ v ^
e--------|-------|-------|
B--------|---2---|-------| Since the strumming pattern is
G--------|---2---|-------| the same for this area too, I
D---2----|---2---|-------| left it out.
A---2----|-------|---5---|
D---2----|-------|---5---|
Em A G (variation)
He drags his first few fingers back across the strings on the
up strum; so if you have nails, it sounds better.
Strumming pattern is the same for all the chords.
Part 1 - intro X 4
Part 2 - harmonics Come a little bit closer
Part 2 - harmonics Hear what I have to say
Part 3 - D A Em ? progression X 2
Part 2 - harmonics Just like children sleepin'
Part 2 - harmonics We could dream this night away
Part 3 - D A Em ? progression X 2
G
But there's a full moon risin'
G
Let's go dancing in the light
Part 1 - intro X 2
G
We know where the music's playin'
G intro (actually starts here)
Let's go out and feel the night
Part 1 - intro X 2
Em A
Because I'm still in love with you
Em
I want to see you dance again
A
Because I'm still in love with you
stop (and here)
On this harvest moon
When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart
But now it's gettin' late
And the moon is climbin' high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin' in your eye
Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon
Bridge:
intro X 2
G
D A E ? prog. X 1
intro X 1
and finish up with slow strum of this chord:
(D with add ons)
e------2--------|
B------3--------|
G------2--------|
D------4--------|
A------5--------|
D---------------|

I believe this is another song written primarily about his wife Pegi. The video of this song focuses on the two of them dancing together.

I love Neil and his music, but nobody can swing back and forth so far between asskickingly amazing(Rockin' in the Free World, Hey Hey, My My, the Weld album) to embarassingly lame. That's part of what makes Neil so great. He's the only guy I know who can be successful doing whatever the hell he wants. He was sued by Geffen for making uncommercial music, that was uncharacteristic of himself. That's testament to his going off the deep end on several occasions. Harvest Moon is just a lame, wussy song, end of story. It's decent and catchy, but Neil's done so much better than that. And it's nothing to do with it being laid back and accoustic. I totally prefer Neil's electric style, but he's great in his low key accoustic songs too. There are tons of these that blow Harvest Moon out of the water. Heart of Gold, Long May You Run, Thrasher, After the Goldrush, My My, Hey Hey, Comes a Time, Crime in the City(The non Weld version. The Weld version is better though.), Don't Let it Bring you Down, Old Man, Sugar Mountain, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Helpless(which actually may be wussier), but it's a better song. I'd pick like 50 Neil Young songs ahead of Harvest Moon. Probably more.

This was actually about a girlfriend Neil had whose mother didn't like him. Also they'd been dropping a lot of acid, and the girl said a lot of stuff about her mother as a result and this was what gave Neil the influence for the song. Read Shakey, his biography, it's brilliant.

the lyrics in this song is really sad i am lead to beleive he used to go out with a girl who's mother tryed to commit suicide by jumping down the stairs. read the start of the song again. in there relationship neil tryed to say to her i will be there for you hence the line "Dream up, dream up, let me fill your cup With the promise of a man" but he did not love her as much as she loved him thats why its says "Will I see you give more than I can take? Will I only harvest some?"

what the hell, no comments. and now its 2005?? fuck people, this is one of the best damn Neil songs out there. I think it has something to do with a girl who might me cheating on him, or he is not giving her enough attention.

My dad's been a Neil Young Fan for years and years. And every time this comes on the radio, he always tells me that this song is a thickly veiled reference to UFOs. Thoughts?

It means dark rooms, grey skies and dancing with the love of my life, hip to hip, lip to lip...

One of my all time favorite songs from one of my all time favorite albums. All of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" has this same warm, golden feel. Matthew Greenwald of www.allmusic.com says of this particular song: "The title track to Neil Young's Harvest Moon encapsulates the mood of the entire album in a single song. The power of nature and music, as well as a feeling of celebrating lifetime love are the focal points here, and Young captures it all in his typically literate, artless style. The melody is positively gorgeous, and it's one that could have easily framed a heavier song. The fact that Young uses the word "celebrate" underlines his feelings here, and the exquisite arrangement and backing vocals (which include Linda Ronstadt) underline this. "

not sure how much any of you folks like The Shins... but an amazing new eclectic band, with a brilliant lyricist/songwriter, James Mercer. he's done a cover of "harvest" at a couple live shows of his 10-10-2004 is one of them... its an excellent rendition... the way he sings the last verse is: "will i see you give more than i can take? will we only harvest some? and as days fly past, will we lose our grasp, or fuse it in the sun?" he also sings "sad face" instead of "black face"... whats your take on the second verse? i feel like ive got a solid idea about the song, but not sure entirely about that verse and how it fits.

Such a great song. I think it's obvious it's about a girl he loved/loves. I think of it every fall when harvest begins and that big full moon rises in the eastern sky.

I spent all summer listening and singing this song, it's so beautifully sad. I'm not too sure what it's about, and I'm not sure I wanna know (for once) - it means a lot to me anyway

I love the sweetness and simplicity of this song...the soft sweeping of the broom in the background..the tenderness in Neil's voice. Neil Young is my husband's favorite singer, and as we were dating I learned more of Neil's songs. We picked this song as "our song". It was the first song we danced to at our wedding, and I must admit, three years into our marriage, the song still brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. Almost as if Neil wrote it for little ol' us. :o)
