In the Aeroplane Over the Sea chords furnished by Ben Hargrave
writen by Jeff Mangum
performed by Neutral Milk Hotel

chorus: G Em C D

G Em
What a beautiful face
C
i have found in this place
D
that is circling all around the sun.
G Em
What a beautiful dream
C
that could flash on the screen
D G
in a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Em
soft and sweet
C D G Em C D
let me hold it close and keep it here with me

and one day we will die
and our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
but for now we are young
let us lay in the sun
and count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
in the arms of all i'm keepin here with me

what a curious life we have found here tonight
there is music that sounds from the street
there are lights in the cloud
*Anna's ghost all around
hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees

Bridge: Em C G D
Em C
now how i remember you
G
how i would push my fingers through
D
your mouth to make those muscles move
Em
that make your voice so smooth and sweet
C
And now we keep where we don't know
G
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
D
with one you loved so long ago

now he don't even know his name

Chorus: G Em C D

What a beautiful face
i have found in this place
that is circling all round the sun
and when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone i see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

And one day we will die And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea But for now we are young Let us lay in the sun And count every beautiful thing we can see that's one of my favourite lyrics of all time. this song is just so wonderful. its message is to live in the present, and enjoy everything in life to the fullest, rather than worrying about the future, and how wonderful the simplicity of life can be.

anne frank was a teenage girl who lived in europe (i think she was originally from germany but they had to move to denmark..or something, it's been a while since i learned this) during the holocaust. she wrote a diary while her family and family friends were in hiding. however, a very short period before ww2 was over, the gestapo found their hiding place and sent her, her family, and the family friends to concentration camps. she died shortly before the concentration camps were freed. i think the only people that survived were her dad, and a couple of her family's friends. i hope this makes sense. but about this song..i think it's the most beautiful song i've heard. it's my favorite song. i've heard it a few times, and i didn't know who it was by. i finally found it and downloaded it today and i started crying really hard when i heard it. beautiful.

The song may be trying to convey the sense that forgetting about the past is best, thus the transition from happiness in the present, to remembering the past, and back to the happiness because of being able to let go of how things used to be.

I'm with you, Mr. Trout. This song is the beginning of the story to me too... it's probably a different story for everyone though. While this song is very optimistic and "feel good," there's a bit of foreshadowing of the tragedy to come with, "...and one day we will die..." Also the menacing breakdown of melody in the saws during the part where it goes to the relative minor makes me feel a little uneasy... especially right after "now he don't even know his name..." But then it's back to youth and love and music and fun. Man... this song is so good. ... that's just what I think though...

"Now how I remember you How I would push my fingers through Your mouth to make those muscles move That made your voice so smooth and sweet And now we keep where we don't know All secrets sleep in winter clothes With one you loved so long ago Now he don't even know his name" this is the most confusing of any quotes ive found on the entire collection NMH cds. at frist i thought it was sexual in nature (just replace mouth with another female orafice) but after noticeing anna franks connection to the song im not quite so sure.

this song is on my "feel good" cd - because that is exactly what it does. it makes me feel so hopeful about the future...and really makes me appreciate this beautiful world and the wonderful people in it.

This song is beautiful, start to finish. I just recently discovered Neutral Milk Hotel, and I'm completely in love. This is what great music is! I can't stop singing this song. "And one day we will die And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea But for now we are young Let us lay in the sun And count every beautiful thing we can see Love to be In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me" Beautiful.

The whole CD is about the holocaust. I don't want to be morbid or anything, but that part that's got you stumped is about a corpse. How I would push my fingers through Your mouth to make those muscles move That made your voice so smooth and sweet The person in question is a Jewish girl, Anne maybe, who cannot speak anymore because, well, she's dead. The 'All secrets sleep' lines can be explained by Peter, a boy in the annex she was staying in. In her diary she hinted at a romantic interest in Peter. Then, Peter died in a concentration camp as well. They can also be explained by her father, Otto Frank, who tore out pages of her diary before it was published. Anne, of course, loved her father before she died. Otto survived the concentration camp, to learn that his entire family had died. Nobody is emotionally stable after that. Hope that helps.

I believe the song is about not only enjoying life in the present, but also, I see it is a religious song. "when we meet on a cloud, we'll be laughing out loud" meaning that there is something after death, something good. Not necessarly religious, but definitely faith-inspired.
