I don't know if I told you
But I'm seeking sanctuary
You'll never guess the things that I do
C D E
I've had the devil round for tea
Don't you know that I'm here beside you
Can't you see that I can't relax
When I saw you in my rearview
C D E
You could've stopped me in my tracks
Ch0rus
C D E
I'll be there for you when you want me to
I'll stand by your side like I always do
In the dead of night, it'll be alright
Cuz I'll be there for you when you want me to

You could take me to an island
Right across a stormy sea
We could worship pagan idols
There together, you and me
Why don't you run over here and rescue me
You could drive down in your car
Why don't we both take a ride and turn that key
We'll drive at sixty miles an hour
I'll be there for you...(2)

| He's a guy who put himself in a very complicated situation just because he has driven his 'car' at top speed, I mean he has commited a lot of crazy things on his life! And that's the reason why he wrote the line "I've had the devil around for tea". Meanwhile his lover has taken a calmer life, so now he's knocking on her door for finding some comfort ("I don't know if I told you / But I'm seeking sanctuary"), despite the fact he's not exactly regret for this behaviour, on the contrary, he seems to want to take her together with him along one of his crazy 'trips'... "Can't you see that I can't relax? When I saw you in my rear view You could have stopped me in my tracks" I think he's suggesting she's the only person in the whole world able to make him reduce his 'speed'. Regarding its chorus ("I'll be there for you when you want me to / I'll stand by your side like I always do / In the dead of night it'll be alright / Because I'll be there for you when you want me to"), I think it's a quite shameless one if you compare it to the rest of the lyrics, since he admits he's making her suffer on living his life at this way, but at the same time he's telling her everything tends to be fine in the end of the day... "Why don't you run over here and rescue me? You could drive down in your car Why don't we both take a ride and turn that key We'll drive at sixty miles an hour" Another shameless verse... He's simply begging her to go to where he is for saving him from himself, but she cannot accompany his crazy rhythm (!)... This Barney... | |
