i agree with heather as to what this song was written about, but as to what it means to me personally, well... i've always related to this song in a way. i see myself in the guy being sung about. rather than being rich money-wise, it seems people always think i'm surrounded by friends and stuff, the life of the party, always have people "into" me or whatever, as if i could choose anyone i wanted or whatever(...), but... there's one person that seems to elude me. that haunts me, and probably always will, and no matter how great of a time i'm having or how well things are going or how many people i'm hanging out with, i *always* find myself coming back to memories of that person... the lyrics so perfectly describe that feeling. i guess what it really is saying is that during those times in your life when you feel on top of the world and all eyes are upon you, it often leads to thoughts like "this scene is lacking the two eyes that matter the most" because it's the times when you're the happiest that you want the person you love to be there, because you want to share joy like that with someone you love. i guess this song could make anyone think twice about judging people who seem to "have it all" ... i mean who knows, maybe that clown who makes everyone you know laugh could be haunted by lost love, and they just hide it really well.

"With all eyes upon him, except two that matter the most." I think a lot of people experience that feeling at one point in life. It's just like straight up raw emontion. one of my favorite songs.

as far as green and gray goes i thought it was a dart playing reference. if a dart lands between the green and the gray areas you dont get any points. i guess ill have to research that but it seems to make sence as far as the girl goes.

I think is written from the viewpoint of an audience member/fan about an artist who basically is in love with this notion of a girl. Although he is used to getting everything he wants, the girl is different and he doesn't know why.

This song is awesome. I love the strings in the background during the chorus, especially during the second chorus. How is it that Nickel Creek continues to make one awesome song after the next? They've gotta be robots.... ;p

Not only are the lyrics just plain awesome, theres a part in the bassline that gives me shivers. I think its classic bass, not electric. About 2 and a half minutes in. I listen to it over and over and over again. . .

poolshark711: This song is about a guy who always gets the girls. "Aim for the bullseye, and hit it nine times out of ten." Then, one day, he sees a girl who he can't get over. "And he wonders aloud why feelings so strong make the body so weak." "Green is the color everyone sees al around me. Gray is the color I see around her, and she's just a blur." What a great line. He has such strong feelings for this girl.. his body is weak, and he can't even see her, she is just a blur.

"green is the color that everyone sees around me" - is that green of envy, or money? I think its about fulfulling his performance obligations, but wishing he could spend more time with the one that he loves. She's becoming grey in his mind because he doesn't get to see her much...

rich guy has everything he wants, thus the color green (envy) is surrounding him when people look at him. I equate this guy to a movie star. He gets everything he wants...except this girl...he tries to get this girl but he failed...he can barely see this girl because she is so far away from his reach, meaning either she is just a nomal girl compared to a movie star/musical artist...and he sees this girl and wants so badly to be with her but is afraid to ruin his pride by being with her. He contemplates this often in his hotel rooms and pretends to be happy...but he thinks about this girl a lot... finally he awakes from a dream of him being with his secret lover..then he wakes up hoping no one will find out... :) I was so happy when I figured this out..tho it's nickel creek so it means something different to everyone.

I have always thought of the beginning of this song as a group of people having a party and the guy that it's about seems almost perfect. Everyone loves him, except for one girl who is to preoccupied with herself that she doesn't even notice him. Of course, as a perfectionist, he beats himself up over it, but can't tell anyone because he likes to be adored and thought of as perfect--he doesn't want to mess up his reputation by sounding weak or sad.

everyone feels that the one that matters the most isn't really noticing them, it's basic human insecurity. But the words that NC has put it to.....god. So fantastic. The vocals and melody make it so ephemeral. I think in the end, it comes down to be about being lovesick, insecure, and hopeful. It's that state of epiphany and sadness comes when one feels like they have no chance with the one they want. Everything about them becomes clearer.
