I agree with the idea that it's about innocence or the loss of it. The first part of the song seems to be talking about a time when he felt free to dream and not care about what might happen. I think that the 'dark chest of wonders' is the world as a whole. To innocent eyes, the world is huge and unexplored; once we've been exposed to it, we lose the sense of wonder and the world becomes a very dark and depressing place. I think the reference to 'what the world stole' is about the innocent part of himself that he feels is lost.

Maybe Peter Pan was the main inspiration to this song, but it's not a song about this story. Some think it silly, but if you listen to more songs of Nightwish, the character of Peter Pan is in fact the one (and only one ever) who did exactly that, what most of their songs want to tell: Don't think rational. Don't think at all. Feel and do what you want to do, not what would be wise to do. If you don't want to become a boring adult (being rational) you don't have to and can remain a playful child (being emotional). Sorry if this makes you think Nightwish no longer to be cool, but that's the message of about every second song of them and the character of Peter Pan is the perfect image for it.

I agree with the Pandora's Box idea. Just a thought, but didn't Pandora open the box twice--once when all the bad things came out and then again when hope came out. That might explain the idea of hope in "opening the chest once more."

going with Silence719\'s ideas. mebe the dark chest of wonders is supposed to be pandora\'s box. and it\'s about the innocent curiosity, and the opening of this mysterious chest of wonders \'once so long ago\'. not really my interpretation, just an idea

Why hasn't anyone wrote about this song yet? I love this song!! For some reason this song reminds me a little of Rhapsody, minus the flutes and stuff. This song is about opening your eyes and discovering new things, i guess. I just love it!
