Thanx, candyG. I don't really relate it directly with Jesus -I mean jesus being the "main character" in the song- because of what Tuomas supposedly said already several times (Quoting: FallenRose24 on 12-26-2005 @ 04:56:40 AM This song is NOT about Jesus Christ. Tuomas has stated several times that Christ was not the subject of the lyrics... ) I began my interpretation from the statement that the song is not a tale of Jesus... but it could be. I personally think Tuomas is ever-confused about himself, his lyrics (he admits that "Elvenpath" gets wako at some point -or sauna-), what he wants, his feelings... I don't think we would ever get to a definitive interpretation without studying his life 'first hand' in a very extensive biography. When historians make an interpretation they gotta know every possible thing about the life of the artist, influences, cultural baggage, traditions of his mother tongue, the historical circumstances at the moment the work was written... and lots of stuff. Well, based on what little I know about him, I'd say either interpretation is possible: We know he seems to write a lot about sins, guilt, biblical stuff, and Bible-related books (let's remember Tolkien is very influenced in LOTR by the christian beliefs and that Tuomas likes LOTR vey much)

Yes, it is about Jesus Christ, but it is again unique. Described in unusual way, Jesus isn't a perfect person in this song. It's also about mankind and our aproach to gods, faith, religion and so on.

This song is NOT about Jesus Christ. Tuomas has stated several times that Christ was not the subject of the lyrics. If you watch the music video, the man in the video spends his whole life trying to build wings. It's a symbol of attempting to reach perfection, to be divine, but his actions go unnoticed.

i applaud you hedelex. your interpretation is obviously really deep, and gave me something to think about.... however, i always perceived this song with an almost dysthimic outlook on christianity (unlike most christian songs which only talk about how great jesus was for dying for our sins and then stop at that). in a simplicity, this song is saying that; jesus was screwed from the very start. i don't mean that in any disrespect at all (i'm partially catholic). but he was basically damned to die for us and there was no changing that.

"They tell me to lie on the grass and observe my saviour The one crucified to the chirping of birds" i dunno......sounds a bit like Jesus if you ask me, FallenRose24. anyways the song is about what it means to YOU. your interpretation doesnt necessarily have to coincide with what the artist thinks it means. besides.........i've seen thousands of music videos that had jack diddly squat to do with the song. i mean take a look at the video for "Wish I had an angel"......they are just standing in a random place playing and looking pretty......has nothing to do with the lyrics lol.

I do think it's at all about Jesus, but the Christ. The Annointed One. You get those in every culture. The video of the song seems to depit a Da Vinci type person, and inventor perchance, who makes his machine.
