I think never fading strings into the next line "rain in your heart" If you've seen the video, it really seems like the adults didn't caress whatever it was that the children had in their hearts...I mean they burnt her.

OK. Let me be the one to put a different spin on things. I am sure that the video and the lyrics are closely linked in that what we see there is a fallen angel. 'Baptized with a perfect name The doubting one by heart Alone without himself' Which fallen angel was a doubting one by heart? Only one - Lucifer. Despite his perfect name, he was 'alone without himself' - alone from God and without himself in the sense that his fall was against what he ought to have been by nature - so he is against himself. 'War between him and the day Need someone to blame In the end, little he can do alone' The rebellion of Lucifer was a 'war between him and the day'. God needed someone to blame for this rebellion, so cast him out - there was 'little he could do alone' to dethrone God. 'You believe but what you see You receive but what you give' Most people just accept the Christian view of things - Lucifer = bad, God = good. You only believe what you see presented as the facts. You only receive what you give - people live within the Christian worldview, and they only get back small returns. There is a play on the well-known biblical phrase about 'what you give is given to you in return'. 'Caress the one, the Never-Fading Rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow Caress the one, the hiding amaranth In a land of the daybreak' Hang on, says Tuomas. What you and I need to do is not reject the Fallen Angel, but caress him. The refrain is an appeal to those who can see beyond the Judeo-Christian way of things so that they will 'caress the never-fading hiding amaranth in the land of the daybreak'. Finland is one of the Scandinavian countries who are traditionally the land of the daybreak and who harbour the roots of paganism and the Old Religions. An amaranth is a flower seen in mythology as symbolising eternity. So, what you have is Lucifer, the never fading one who hides in the land of the daybreak despite the surrounding Christianity. What are we to do? Caress him not reject him. Ought we to hear 'Rain in your heart' or 'Reign in your heart'? I wonder whether the tears of snow-white sorrow refer to Lucifer who 'innocently' has been cast down for nothing more than exercising his free will, or whether this line is just padding to give credence to the double-entendre of reign/rain? Perhaps. 'Apart from the wandering pack In this brief flight of time we reach For the ones, who ever dare' Who are the wandering pack? Everyone who lives thoughtlessly in Christian ignorance. Who are the ones who ever dare? Those who follow an Older path and who in their brief flight of time dare to believe something different. 'Reaching, searching for something untouched Hearing voices of the Never-Fading calling' Untouched because so few dare to do so. Nevertheless, the Never Fading One calls to us if we will hear him. Not God, of course, but Lucifer. This song is veiled but decipherable. OK. 'Nuff said.

Amaranth is the name of a flower, it's name derived from a Greek word meaning 'the one that does not wither'. It's known as the never-fading flower. That clearly relates to the chorus. I'm not quite sure if 'never-fading' and 'rain' are meant as two separate terms or one singular phrase. I'd say that the amaranth is symbolic of something, but again I'm not sure what. Perhaps an eternal struggle for happiness, "Reaching, searching for something untouched".

Tuomas actually didn't even want this song on the album, much less as a single. There was an interview with him recently and he was saying that as he was writing the chorus he was laughing to himself saying that it 'would never work' and was 'too poppish'..... Thank god the rest of the band talked him into it...

Amaranth was immortality like korwyn said..i think that tuomas tried to say with that song that tarja is holding amaranth...Or maybe that fans think that she holds immortality for nightwish and if she goes nightwish dies...or something like that...sorry if i'm wrong...i tried..=)

Should have also said - the video really does have as it's visual inspiration 'The Wounded Angel' - you only have to look at the painting to immediately see it. Which are the the two characters Simberg used most in his art? They are the "Poor Devil" and Death. The 'Poor Devil'? Hmm - wonder how THAT fits in with what I have suggested as the lyrical meaning of this song? I think it ought to be self-explanatory.

@angilwingz: BTW, I was wondering if they also burnt the boys. I can't find the boys in both the scenes inside the shack and outside the shack at the end of the video...

I guess snow white is hiding in the land of daybreak. Amaranth symbolises eternity. As far as the perfect name goes, there can be only one.

Lyrics are a bit off. Jarmo's posted them on the site: Baptised with a perfect name The doubting one by heart Alone without himself War between him and the day Need someone to blame In the end, little he can do alone You believe but what you see You receive but what you give Caress the one, the Never-Fading Rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow Caress the one, the hiding amaranth In a land of the daybreak Apart from the wandering pack In this brief flight of time we reach For the ones, whoever dare You believe but what you see You receive but what you give Caress the one, the Never-Fading Rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow Caress the one, the hiding amaranth In a land of the daybreak Reaching, searching for something untouched Hearing voices of the Never-Fading calling Caress the one, the Never-Fading Rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow Caress the one, the hiding amaranth In a land of the daybreak

i just have to say its an amazing song by far. im not quite sure what it means exactly yet but im still looking closely into each phrase to make sure i have things right wen i get teh chance. so far all i've gotten is that amaranth is a symbol for eternity. i have a lot of different things going in my mind about each phrase so i have to put tehm to gether to see wat i get x] for now only nightwish knows for sure.

Hi, I just wanted to write what I think is reflected with this text. I'll work paragraph by paragraph, to show why I came to my conclusions. I don't believe in god, but I think this song is about god and believing in him. I wrote the lyrics as I heard them. Oh, and I'm german, so apologize my bad english an maybe my bad understanding of the english words: Baptized with a perfect name The doubting one by heart Alone without himself (This paragraph describes the average human: baptized, with a perfect name (after all, all names are perfect, since god gave them?), sometimes doubting what he is believing (believing in god), and alone without god. The last line references god by "himself".) War between him and the day Need someone to blame In the end, little he can do alone (There is a war between the human and the day. People have to work, live, etc. all the day and this can be hard. Most of the humans need someone to blame for all the bad things that happen to them during the day, and some ask god "why?" blaming him. But believing helps them to go on, that means, they are not alone, but they have god at their side. Without god they can't do all the things in live.) You believe but what you see You receive but what you give (Most people need to see a proof to believe. This does not work with believing in god. But one of gods rules is, what you give is given to you in return, referring to the bible.) Caress the one, the Never-Fading Rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow Caress the one, the hiding amaranth In a land of the daybreak ("the one", "the Never-Fading" and "the hiding amaranth" all refer to god. Amaranth actually means "the Never-Fading" (see wikipedia on amaranth). I don't think that "Never-Fading" and "Rain" are tied together. I see the second line alone as a statement of a human that feels pain in some way. This may be the pain, that the day brings for him, as stated in "War between him and the day" above. "Rain in your heart" actually means sorrow. "Snow-white" may be a a metaphor for innocence. The last line refers to the earth as "land of the daybreak". One should praise ("caress") god here on earth.) Apart from the wandering pack In this brief flight of time we reach For the ones, who ever dare (There are others, who don't believe ("the wandering pack"). But those who do try to reach the level of believing of the believers (the ones who always dare to believe) during their short lifetime ("brief flight of time"). Note that in contrast to most other lyrics I found, I split "whoever" into two words. I don't know if this semantically correct, but I think this fits better into the context meaning "who always dare [to believe]".) You... + 2 x Refrain Reaching, searching for something untouched Hearing voices of the Never-Fading calling (Humans are searching for god. God is actually untouched, since nobody has touched him :). The second line could refer to the conscience (as voices of god, since he gave us the conscience) or to the end of the life, like "god calls you back to heaven".) 2 x Refrain

Perhaps the amaranth is a symbol of the innocence that Tuomas speaks so longingly about...

"Caress the one, that hiding Amaranth in a land of the daybreak..." To me, and I might be WAY off base here, but I think it's about seeing the good in something or someone when no one else sees it. I'm still not sure about the "never-fading rain," but then again, that's what I've always loved about Nightwish's lyrics.

pencils3 is spot on to me. Amaranth is also supposed to be the flowers that represent Immortality but also in Milton's Paradise Lost the Elysian Fields are covered in Amaranth flowers. "Immortal amarant, a flower which once In paradise, fast by the tree of life, Began to bloom; but soon for man's offence To heaven removed, where first it grew, there grows, And flowers aloft, shading the fount of life, And where the river of bliss through midst of heaven Rolls o'er elysian flowers her amber stream: With these that never fade the spirits elect Bind their resplendent locks." (source is Wikipedia for the quote from Paradise Lost)

This song was really hard for me to figure out. I still don't get most of it. It helps with the video. First, I'ma answer some questions: 1) I don't think the villagers burned the two boys, I think they dragged them out 2) Blackchimera, I think your logic is flawed in that a "hiding amaranth in the land of daybreak" wouldn't be viewed as bad. Maybe that's just my opinion. "You believe but what you see You recieve but what you give" Great line. They're talking about non-believers. In the case of the music video, the villagers believed that the angel was evil, differant, strange, scary. That's what they saw. In the end, they recieved what they gave. They burned the angel, so they lost her. That's actually a highly literal example. I like it. Here's what I want to know. In the video, the Angel appeared to have had her eyes gouged out. That's undoubtedly symbolic. Additionally, she was wearing pure white. Also symbolic (99.9% of the time white = purity or goodness or refers to purity or goodness ironically. In this case I'm betting it was the former). The amaranth is representitive of the rain, which is in turn representitive of sorrow. The amaranth never withers, the rain never fades, the rain is "tears of snow white sorrow". Why should we caress sorrow? To get over it? Because we need it? Why is the sorrow "snow-white"? Does that mean its unadulterated sorrow? Does it mean that the sorrow is for a pure reason? Sorrow for something that is pure?

The angel-theme in the video has probably been inspired by a painting made by a Finnish symbolist painter Hugo Simberg. The referred painting is called "The Wounded Angel". More information can be found from Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Simberg
