As you get close to the arctic, you have days where there is only light or only darkness for long periods of time. The "222 days of light" may refer to going north (as the previous line said something about sailing away) but that may be too literal.

i got this from wikipedia... They recorded this sinlge which is btw called "Sleeping Sun (Four Ballads of the Eclipse)", for the solar eclipse in Germany, in 1999... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightwish#End_of_an_Era_.282005.E2.80.932006.29

This song is definately about an eclipse although that is obviously the more literal aspect and i presume is a metaphor. I'm not too sure of the figurative meaning here but maybe its about longing for a rest from your life. "The sun is sleeping quietly Once upon a century Wistful oceans calm and red Ardent caresses laid to rest" "I wish for this night-time to last for a life-time" "Oh how I wish to go down with the sun" "I`d sail before a thousand moons Never finding where to go" It maybe ties in with songs like ocean soul. I think in this song he is searching for something or someone. A soul lost at sea and always searching, and maybe he's tired of searching and wants to be able to rest, like the sun during an eclipse. "Sleeping Weeping With you" "I wish for this night-time to last for a life-time" He wishes for this rest to last forever. He wants to find what he's searching for. He wants to find the person who will love him and understand him and see the beauty of his soul? "222 days of light Will be desired by a night" Obviously wanting more nighttime and less daylight. "For wishes I behold my nights"

I agree, this song is beautiful... Just dreaming away into an everlasting night.
