Subject: TAB: "Burn" by Nine Inch Nails

From: burning.inside@f929.n273.z1.fidonet.org

Burn by Nine Inch Nails
from the soundtrack for the film "Natural Born Killers"
words and music by Trent Reznor
tabbed by Tom Mallon

Tuning DADGBE

~~~~~- hold note
^r- bend full and release
- slide up/down
During the verses, there is a low synth that goes along with the bass
drums. If you want to play along with that as well, just use a D5 chord,
shaped like 00xxxx.
After "Sometimes I think I could... burn" the bass plays this, but it
sounds just as good on guitar:
E --------------------------
B --------------------------
G --------------------------
D --------------------------
A --~~~~~--------3---~~-----
D -0------6--5------3-------
After "I'm gonna burn this whole world down":
E -------------------------------------------------------
B -------------------------------------------------------
G --5/7-7--5/7--5/7-7--5/7--5/7-7-5/7------10------12----
D --5/7-7--5/7--5/7-7--5/7--5/7-7-5/7------10------12----
A --3/5-5--3/5--3/5-5--3/5--3/5-5-3/5--0-0-8---0-0-10----
D -------------------------------------------------------
A second guitar (Robin Finck, when done live) plays this underneath it:
E -------------------------------------------------------------------
B -------------------------------------------------------------------
G -------------------------------------------------------------------
D -------------------------------------------------------------------
A --9~~~~~~~~--9^r--3~~~~~--9~~~~~~~~-9^r-3~~-3~~~~~~~~-/-15-------
D -------------------------------------------------------------------
There's been a lot of disputes about the lyrics, here's what I can make out
best listening to both the recording and seeing it live. All but that one
line are, in my opinion, correct.
This world rejects me
This world threw me away
This world never gave me a chance
This world gonna have to pay
Well I don't believe in no institutions
I did what you wanted me to
I'm like the cancer in your system
I've got a little surprise for you
Something inside of me has opened up its eyes
Why did you put it there? Did you not realize
This thing inside of me it screams the loudest sound
Sometimes I think I could
Burn
I look down at where you're standing
Flock of sheep are on display
Saw your lives burned up around you
I can take it all away
Something inside of me has opened up its eyes
Why did you put it there? Did you not realize
This thing inside of me it screams the loudest sound
Sometimes I think I could
I'M GONNA BURN THIS WHOLE WORLD DOWN
I never was a part of you (burn)
I never was a part of you (burn)
I am the ....
I am corruption
I am the angel of your destruction
I am perversion
Secret desire
I am your future
Swallowed up in fire
(Note: when I saw this performed at Woodstock I'm pretty sure he said "I am
religion" in that one part. However, that's not what it sounds like on the
tape, and when I saw him live the other night I couldn't make it out.)
This song is not about religion. Maybe is about organized religion, corporations, the goverment, mainstream media and the whole society. The lyrics cant be more antisocial. I think that he's talking about a moment when you realize that everything is bullshit. The lyrics fit very well with the natural born killers story for which the song was made. Thats it.
To answer your question, please, for the love of useless posts, please watch Natural Born Killers. You will get the answers you seek... Its basically about being rejected by the world and the feelings that that person feels because of his "exile." Sure, it may have the religious stabs in it, but the song circles around Woody's character I think. Maybe. Not sure.
I've wanted to see the movie for awhile, but I haven't been able to get my hands on it. I'm not much of a fan of the song, but lyrics-wise, I believe it's above average.
This song is about sociopaths!! Those of you who have seen the video will see a man at the beggining saying "he always kept to himself" etc. and the video has similar grapics as the movie Natural Born Killers and it features Mickey and Mallory. It's trying to make you see how sociopaths think, and act. They're believed to be charming then they snap: "sometimes i think i could burn" Seriously research sociopaths/ psychopaths and then reread the lyrics, it'll make sense.
