as recorded on NIN's album The Downward Spiral

-There is alot more going on in this song than what I have transcribed. 
 Most of it is synth, but I know that alot of the synth is changed to 
 guitar when Trent preforms it with his live band so I transcribed it for
 guitar and bass. To have it sound exactly like it does on the album, 
you'd
 need 4 guitars (all with effects processers), two drum sets, and a bass.
 
 I'm assuming that you have one or maybe two guitars (and if you're in a 

 band, a bass) so that's all I transcribed it for. Also I'm just posting
 the main riffs. You can figure out how many times to play them.

synth line to guitar-note the tuning...this song is played best with an 
envelope filter, but for those who don't have one, a wah sounds ok...

	"You bring me closer to God." Let's see, how to interpret this song. The man is a user. The man is incomplete. He needs HER to live. Through her, he finds satisfaction of his power, his dominance, and his lust. Through her, he can vent his fears, his hate--he can let her "have my everything." And when it's all done, she brings him closer to God..

	I'm not compeletly sure what this song is about (i like all of your ideas and some of the comments made me giggle.. anyhow....) how i see it is, God is seen as this all-powerful all-knowing thing right? well, that's quite the desireable position to be in (if you're into that sorda thing) and so whatever girl he's with makes him have that... so getting closer to God, i think just means that he's becoming more godlike, and not like he's in the process of believing in God or something because he does say he has an absance of faith, so i don't think he'd be singing about believing then talk about how he has no faith... and yes, that's my opinion

	Its about control and insecurity and selfhate. He needs someone to make him feel like he has power, he needs something that can take his mind completely away from himself and reality and into another world, he needs something that can "bring him closer to god". He finds his control and his everything in a woman, who lets him have complete control over her, so she takes away his "isolations, hate, absence of faith" and she gives him what he needs.

	I think the speaker is actually falling in love with a woman, possibly for the first time, and although he gets all these lovely feelings, he can't help but go back to what he know's. I think the closer to God bit is just an exxageration of how good she makes him feel, but because of the way he is used to treating his partners, he can't show her love, he can just fuck her like an animal!

	I'm feeling too lazy to pick the song apart myself, but I agree with ks7702. The opening beat also sets a good pace for the bedroom. An ex and I used this song a lot to set the mood.

	He's talking about a lover of his who makes him feel like he's in control, when nothing else can do that for him. She's basically the only thing he has left. This is just part of the story of The Downward Spiral album. To get a full understanding, you must listen to and understand the album as a whole.
