| WOW! What a beautiful song! I can relate to it so well! It's obviously about hoping to become close to someone, but that hope falls through, and it hurts like HELL! I LOVE "The Downward Spiral!" It's my favorite album ever! | |

| RubberDuckieYAY makes a good point. the song sums up a relationship. and the last four parts (lose me, hate me, smash me, erase me) describes an ex girlfriend that is bitchy and claims to "get over" him when she really hasn't, and is rubbing it in. . M ¥ ß E A U T I ƒ U £ £ I A R . | |

| No, actually everyone is wrong here. This song ties into the storyline of the whole album...it's where he rejects himself yet again, but this time it becomes more severe. "You" is talking about GOD, not a person...it's something I noticed in this album. Every time "you" is used, it's referring to god, not a living person. Anyhow, it talks about how he found god, then rejected god, now rejects himself because of god's doing "lose me, hate me, smash me, erase me"...and he makes one final plea to god..."kill me." That is my interpretation of the song and I find it to be fairly accurate with the storyline. | |

That One Guy Musical Genius |

| Not saying this is necessarily a bad song or anything of the sort, just to me the song reminds me of a rapist. Like a song that a rapist would sing if he were to sing. Totally not want Trent meant with this song, and it does fit for repititious relationships, but the song just takes me to a rapist point of view. | |

| It,would be interesting to me if that were the case (TREXOR). If Reznor feels insignificant he is really the most sardonic human ever..The Downwardspiral is argueably in the top 5 most influetial albums of the 90s. Now I can see forgotten maybe because it takes him a half decade to produce a freshalbum. He does seem to dkissapear. However Trent's unrelenting misery and comical mix of blasphemy and repeantance is luminary and definately unforgetable, He is one of the lights that will shine for decades, to the dismay of many. Hey maybe he will come out with more low key, fear-driven l creations of the genius and insanity. Maybe something like Toad the wetsprocket. Lets see if we can cheer Trent up a bit. Maybe we could beat him senseless then humiliate him back to cosciousness only to bleed him out near death. Thats what I think he needs some real physical torture and then maybe he wouldn't feel so guilty. But really he needs to get over himself..... he acts like him and God sits down at 3pm and plays chess ebvery day showing him over and over he is a worthless idiot. Does Trent thimk hes the only person to experience "the Dark Night of th Soul"? To last 15 years, though thats something. I hate to say it but I believe his misery, his ego and pride won't let go. Thats it.....thats all youneed to do Trent, I really worryabout you if by some chance you everread this jargon. Theres a way out other than afixing a muzzle and pipe to your face terminally draining toilet water into your mouth, Man that was a horrible thing to see. Where does he come up with this creepy stuff?. | |

| When I talk about every reference being towards god, it's in a metaphorical way. The sex in "Closer" isn't real, it's a metaphor for something that gets the protagonist closer to god. As for "you" in that song and "God" getting closer to "God", I believe that the protagonist doesn't fully believe in a transcendent at this point and thus he is contemplating it. | |

| Although I believe the song deals with repetitious relationships, the only kind there is pherhaps, I think your interpretation is thoughtfull and interesting. If you continued the sequence, the last four lines could mean he regrets ever having such a dream and wishes to be disowned, hated and erased from the public eye. | |

| Coming back to this song after years now I see its beauty. This song is completely about lust, in particular lust for God. It is the progression that takes place with the soul 's yearning for God while being separated and attached to itself as its own God. At first soul is separate from God and one with self. Needing , seeking, reaching, grabbing, and then violating..... You= truth= love= "GOD" Then soul then catches a glipse of God and the kiss is deadly. The soul separates from the self , but is still attached. It is now aware of its misery away from the true God. It is also now aware it is being controlled by the self and recognizes that the self is the God which it has followed. It wishs to be with its creator and hates itself. Me = truth = love = "GOD" | |

| this song describes years of Trents life (at least in my opion) in only a few simple, dramatic, words. It's amazing. This is one of my favorite songs ever, just the way the music builds, and leads to just a few words. Its wonderful! | |

| Rubber, I couldn't say it any better. This song reminds me of betrayal. Why don;t people come out with this sort of music anymore? If you want another song that is like this, listen to TOOL's Merkaba. Amazing. Both these guys are carrying the 90's torch together into an age of new music while still being successful. Congrats. What ever happened to KoRn? They hit the ugly tree I hate to say... I was such a fan... | |

| Wow, is this even a song? Well, whatever it is... it's some creepy ass shit. I listened to it for a little bit and it sounds like someone ran a phone line to hell, then rang up someone else's phone, then left it off the hook. Well, anyway, this song sounds to me like someone is suffering in hell, and they want to be erased from existance because of it... I mean what else could it sound like? | |
