Words of "Mommy" :
This is an interestin tune...tune down to DROP D for this one...
The outro at first sounds like it changes every other measure,
but if you listen really closely, it's all synth noise
that I couldn't hear well enough to TAB out...

Words of "Psylip" :
This song is full of "parasit" noises. That's why the chorus part
and the outro sound weird to me. Anyway all others sound good.
I'm not sure trent "sings" all the outro the way it is printed
And last "if there is a hell" could be ~ "it's that all I have".

For one thing guys this song is not about how "GOD IS DEAD" or there is no god or whatever else it is just about how in TODAYS society alot of people call themselves religious when they are not and he is saying that if god died people wouldn't know or care and by this causing them to go to hell(if there is one). THat is what it is about.

i dont think he meant it to simply mean christianity is nonesense. I think he's meaning religion in general, is just used to keep people in line. Its just used to brainwash people into being "good" so they dont commit "sins". Also about how religion, chrisitianity the most, is hypocritical. "Thou shall not kill", yet we involve ourselves in so many wars in the name of religion and god. Its basically him picking an example of the worlds ignorance, and elaborting and magnifying it.

I guess its just a view on how much religion has died down in the last 50 years or so. It shows that people are becoming apathetic or just dont want to believe. Or it could be that some so called Christians commit the worst of sins yet they claim to obey all the rules

This isn't about the song really, it's more about the viewpoints of some of the people posting. The only instances Christianity has been used to justify killing is when the government intertwines itself with religion. Think about it. It's not just Chrisitianity either. It's all religions that have hypocritical elements to them. However, you can't just apply this to ALL the people who practice the religion. Not everyone is corrupt. Back to my main point, religion is only corrupt when it controls the government or is the government. Instances of this are the Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades, the war between the Jews and the Muslims over Israel, The bombing of the WTC. I'm sure there are many other instances, but these few show how necesary separation of church and state really is. About the song, I agree with odin_lowe.

Trent Reznor used Nietzsche's phrase in this song, "god is dead". Which means that religion can no longer have the power to govern lives between good and bad. Should we have a social code of morals by which we follow? Or should we have our own, in the nihilistic way? Nietzsche was not a nilhist, he questioned the consequences of nihilism. Also, that man is not god's worst creation, god is man's own worst creation. And if god is real, and you said fuck him, then you would rather be tortured in hell, than serve a ruthless god in life, only to be rewarded by the same fuck afterwards. I don't believe in god, it's all a hypocrisy anyway. And i'll see you in hell if i'm wrong.

Well, Christianity isn't only bad in regards to killing -- there are a lot of flag-waving Christians who are keeping children from learning valuable things about the world -- like evolution -- because it contradicts what they think is right or what the Bible says. You're right, not everybody in a religion is accountable for what other people do, but when you have a high majority acting in a certain way, you can't say that it doesn't exist, or it isn't a problem. The Bible saying that all people on Earth come from Adam or Eve, or even Noah and his compatriots, is utter nonsense. It's non-scientific, it's not validated, and to tell people otherwise is to hold them back, education-wise, and intellectually (because if you get too far in to believing something, you may never come out). As far as wars being a product only of man... that's the "only give God credit for the good things" line again. If a parent tells his child where a loaded gun is, and the child shoots someone, why is the parent not responsible? In the same way, if God gives man free will, and man uses free will to kill, then why is God not responsible? Anyway... I'm so sick of the term "sheep" in regards to religious people or metal "posers" or anything. It's cliche, it's overdone, and I hope it doesn't show up in any more lyrics... people could be more imaginative... they're supposed to be ARTISTS, for crying out loud...

Harry I agree. I think that the God that people create is what is dead and false. With whatever you believe, that God is eternal. But whatever people sling around, using God to show how they shine in his light while you don't and how they push and shove religion down your throat, it is the made up God. I think this more makes fun of man than God. At least man who closes his eyes to what is there and claims he knows the meaning of life labeling it christianity. Also I think its funny when Reznor says "if there is a hell, I'll see you there." Kind of stating that he'll take a chance on whatever he believes in, and go to hell... if there is even one (perhaps created by man to use against others once again).

Its about denial, the boy (representing society, christians, ect) is living in denial. Theres also alot of sarcasm towards god and christianity in general, one quote being "his perfect kingdom of killing, suffering, and pain demands devotion, atrocities done in his name "..which is beyond true. yet again..trent reznor has exceeded in showing he's talent. I think theres alot of hidden anger in this song.

Hate to say this, but everyone so far is 100% wrong. Trent Reznor said, and I quote, "I was trying to explore some of the paranoia I have as a sexually active person in the age of AIDS. I guess I feel cheated for not growing up in a more liberated era. At the same time, what gets me mad is the way the right wing has used the 'convenience' of this epidemic in helping to promote their own agenda." -Trent Reznor (from an interview in U Magazine [4/94])
