actually YOUR am idiot Sinistercontrivance.....Trent ODed in London and nearly died. Let's say he tried "a few of the hard ones" more than once. To me this song is more about Trent realizing that he's become the druggie that he never thought he'd ever be.

It seems to me that he is trying to get closer to god maybe... Or perhaps just a better place. Like nirvana or something, he's trying to get away from everything else.

Definitely about drugs... Also, Trent has mentioned many times in interviews recently, that With Teeth relates a lot to his substance abuse, and trying to overcome it. And what other song is more about addiction than closer. I do feel though, that the title and some of the lyrics are a nod to pink floyd's "the wall". "I made it 10 miles high" a double meaning, getting high on drugs, and building a wall 10 miles high that separates himself from the world. "Tear it all down" tearing down that wall. Roger Waters wrote the wall in reference to himself and how horrible he thought he had become as a musician. Creating this artificial wall that separated the artist from the audience. It all came from a previous tour, Waters spat in the face of a fan at a concert. I think Reznor is actually relating to this as well. His long time on the road touring, and being on drugs. Put him in this divided world.

NEVER MIND MY LAST POST - It has a mistake. THESE are the correct lyrics. I'm getting closer, [4x] All the time, I'm getting closer, All the time, I'm getting closer, [2x] All the time, I'm getting closer, [5x] I tried to get so high, I made it 10 miles high, I'm gonna get so high, I'm gonna get so high, You'll never get inside, I swore I'd never turn into you, I'm closer all the time, I made it 10 miles high, Can't tell my truths from my lies, I swore to god I would never turn into you, I'm getting closer, All the time. Tear it all down. [8x] Tear it all -

Its funny looking back at posts. For example, look at the first post at the top by egb. We all know now Trent was druggy.

Noone's commented on this song. This song is fucking cool. I'd give my opion on this song, but well it's not necessary. In case anyone thought trent wasn't into drugs

maybe by getting "so high" he means getting above that something he swore he'd never be, but instead, all that hard-work is somehow getting him closer to that something, so he works even HARDER, and this goes on and on until he either realizes this pattern, or 'til he finally becomes that something... thats just me

You are an idiot, egb. As a matter of fact Trent isn't into drugs; he tells the story in a few interviews of how he tried some of the hard ones once, found it was over-rated, and renounced them. Apparently, Trent lacks the weakness necessary to enjoy drugs. My opinion on the song is in absolute concurence with MeshBlorg, above.

It's about turning into the person you hate and being partly in denial of it by saying that you are so high and away from the person you hate but for some reason your constantly falling down lower towards him/her at the bottom. Letting the hate you have for this person turn you into them.
