I don't see how you come to that conclusion... I just don't see even a hint of black metal in Opeth's music. They don't use keyboards, they don't shriek, they don't have much atmospheric backing to their music (they don't need it) and while depressing, their lyrics are rarely in any sort of gothic style. Metal Storm (www.metalstorm.ee) refers to them as progressive death metal in their bio, but on the other hand, Swedish Metal (www.swedishmetal.net) refers to them as "an original style, blending death and black metal", so maybe you are on the right track... eh. None of the black metal I listen to sounds anything at all like Opeth, though.

I fell absolutely in love with Opeth just three days ago, and bought all six of their albums and have listened to them all non-stop since, and so far this is my absolute favorite Opeth song, because, as you all said, it is relaxing. Still black-metal, though, of which I am a huge fan of, and it almost sounds like a really depressing version of a Seals and Crofts song done by a black-metal band. Dirge for November is another awesome song though, and you all should check it out if you liked this one...

This song is so relaxing...just puts me at ease. I love listening to this song whenever I'm feeling bad, it just relaxes me from doing anything stupid to someone else or myself.

NihilisticIdol: Sorry to burst your bubble, but Opeth is Death metal. Black metal would be along the lines of say, Cradle of Filth. Anyway, I totally agree. I do tend to like opeth's clean acoustic song more then the death metal ones. 'cept Demon of the Fall.

No, no, Opeth are death metal. Just a very progressive kind. The whole image of the band could quite easily give the impression of a BM or doom outfit though, I agree.

I don't know how much this means to you guys, but Akerfeldt thinks Opeth is Death Metal. "I think we are definitely still a death metal band. And to many we are nothing but a death metal band, and we cling to those roots...We just wanna make Opeth the band that expanded from being a death metal band to something else, but still having those roots." - As quoted in "Choosing Death: THe Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore" which I might add is a great book! Regardless, fantastic song. One of Opeth's best. Then again, I could list 15 songs that are "one of Opeth's best"... they're just all so good!

They actually fit into their own genre... "Opeth Metal"... and thats the statistical and factual truth.
