| Songs like these are what make Opeth such an original metal band. They can go from screaming in your face to lulling you into relaxation. | |

| I think this song might be about.. suicide. What brought this to mind was the lines "Into the orchard I walk peering way past the gate" "Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait".. Like he couldn't wait to die, to live out his life. Those who believe in the whole Heaven and Hell thing believe that suicides end up in Hell.. The "Wilted scenes.." describes this to me. Also those who commit suicide are sometimes referred to as martyrs, I'm not sure why.. since they die for themselves not for other people... Such a very beautiful song though, and so sad, so full of emotion. | |

| its amazing that for such a melodious song they are hardly a few comments while crap lile LP gets the whole goddamn world's attention....cmon ppl... oh well....the song as put forward by most of y'all is about coming to terms with your own impending death. And though you die alone you would prefer if someone close to you is there to comfort you..... A great song from a great concept album.... Opeth rocks..\m/.. Peace out... | |

| Supplanter: I don't really think that it is about dying in place of someone else (a lot of ppl think of jesus when they see the word martyr). I think it's just about having someone at your side while you die. You want them to stay and to be faithfull, which explains the first 2 lines you quoted. For the last one, when he walks down towards his destiny in pain, he hears the mourning of his bloved ones from earth, and he's kinda like, hey, im the one dying here. Thats my vision on the whole thing. Damn this song is so beautiful, so pretty yet so sad, and you dont even have to hear the lyrics to feel that sphere. Probably one of the greatest songs of alltime. Just so pure. | |
