John Michael Osbourne (born December 3, 1948), known as Ozzy Osbourne, is the lead singer of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath and a popular solo artist and reality television star. Osbourne has been married twice and is father to six children: Jessica Hobbs, Louis Osbourne, and adopted son Elliot Kingsley, by first wife Thelma Riley; and Aimee, Kelly and Jack, by current wife Sharon. He has two grandchildren by daughter Jessica.
Black Sabbath met with swift and enduring success. Built around Iommi's grinding riffs and Butler's dark lyrics, their early records such as their self-titled debut, Paranoid and Master of Reality in particular are considered definitive of heavy metal. This was almost despite the modest investment by their record label; in particular, Paranoid was to be named War Pigs after the first track, and thus featured cover art of a man in a pig snout holding aloft a sword. The album was renamed but the cover art remained unchanged.
Several of their early singles, especially " Paranoid" and " Iron Man", continue to draw significant radio airplay to this day. Osbourne himself continued to perform these hits during his lengthy solo career.
Osbourne was fired from the band because of his overuse of drugs in 1979, to be relaced by Ronnie James Dio. Depressed, his drug and alcohol abuse continued. He divorced his first wife, Thelma, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Now managed by Sharon Arden (Sabbath manager Don Arden's daughter) Osbourne attempted to launch a solo career, and met with considerable success on his very first effort.
