Album: Spiritual Machines
Tab by: Mike M. Phishytoast@aol.com

Hey everyone. Big OLP fan here. While OLP playes like everything
tuned down 1/2 step, i am way too lazy, let alone not nearly skilled enough
to tune down properly. Everytime i do it sounds pretty bad. So this
tab is written in STANDARD tuning (EADGBe).

Now this song is syncopated, which means the notes are played on the
off-beats. So you'll have to listen to the song to pick up the rhythem.
But it sounds great.INTRO: (this is played all through the song at different times)

e---------9-8-9h-8p-9h/6--------9-8-9h-8-9h/6--
B--9-9-9-----------------9-9-9-----------------
G----------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------

e---------9-8-9h-8p-9h/6-----------6----
B--9-9-9-----------------9-9-7-7----9---
G---------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------- 2x
A---------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------

that weird thing on the 'e' string with the hammer pull off and slide
is a quick trill. you will have to play with it, but listen to the song
and you will catch on quickly.

VERSE:

F# D#
She builds her own satellite
C# C#
From an old rusted chair . . .

This chord progression repeats until the intro comes in again. Then
the chords are played along with the intro.

here are the chord forms:
F# D# C#
e----------------------
B--11------8------6----
G--11------8------6----
D--9-------6------4----
A----------------------
E----------------------

This song basicaly uses that intro, and these chords. This isn't
everything obviously, they jam out quite a bit, but i believe they stay
pretty close to that intro

h=hammer
p=pull off
/=slideAgain, I wrote this in STANDARD tuning. Enjoy! Oh yeah, if you havn't
yet, if you have this album, leave this song on for like 20 minutes and
there is a hidden track. It's just that guy talking to a machine, but
it's kinda freaky weird. But hey, i was bored. Enjoy the tab, add to
it if you want!

Seems to me that this ties into the final dialog like this: molly has taken the final step, taking her old mortal body (rusted chair) and moving up into higher forms of thought and sensation (the satellite), and this song is about ray watching her change and wishing that he could see/do/be what she can/is. This is further shown in the dialog with the music creation story...hes waiting to do what she has done.

First of all, this is one of my most favorite songs ever. It's hard to describe the feeling is gives me...almost euphoric. I think it is about wanting someone/something so bad that you once had but lost...even though you know you can't have it, you still want it, unchanged.

I think this is one of the most beatiful songs ever. it's one of my favorites, anyway. I really like the line 'she leaves this whole world behind'

Brilliant song. think its about a girl who Raine admires so much, but she is metaphorically ahead of the world, and he wants her back sooo bad... so he makes himself believe she will come back to save him from "the age of spiritual machines" or something... :p

I see it as about someone who's found some sort of faith, or coping, something he cannot believe in as well. And maybe what she's found is real, or maybe her satellite is really just a rusty chair. Something that could seem almost denial, delusion, to those who don't have the same faith. "She needs to know I'm alive But I'm flesh and I tear" Perhaps her need for him to believe too? She wants him to be as happy in her faith? But he's not up to it, he can't or doesn't believe...maybe she's wrong but she seems happy and he doesn't know for sure that her dream isn't true...almost wistful? The need for something to believe in..envious, almost. I don't know how this fits into Kurzweil's book, though. *shrug* I'll read it eventually. For some reason this sound of this song reminds me a little of U2. Dunno why. But I love it.

this is a great ending to spiritual machines. In my opinion, all of that record tells a story about the rise of power of machines. In the beginning, they're stupid, just doing whatever they are told: "no matter what im always right there behind you." The machines get more advanced, at first being used for good things, but then 'losing their innocence' and gaining free will. They take over humans: prosecute and control them until the climax at "all my friends." "if you believe" offers a way out through the morals of religion. "The wonderful future" sums up the whole album and gives it a positive spin. In this song, the girl is a metaphor for the human spirit. The idea that no matter how advanced computers get, we will always be morally one step higher than them because all humans possess a concience and knowledge of right and wrong that can't be destroyed (i dunno how much i believe that, but i think thats what hes saying). In the song, the human spirit finds ways to grow and survive even when left with almost nothing (a lawnchair).

Here's how the second verse goes: "She builds a strong alibi From the future that's here She needs to know I'm alive But I'm flesh and I tear Maybe she's wrong But I won't mind my own What do I know? And their silicone With a touch of her soul What do I know? She's beautiful and wonderful I can't compare It's not that fair"

The whole cd is modeled after the book "The Age of the Spiritual Machines." The book is, well, kinda frightening, but at the same times is quite amazing. I think that OLP did an amazing job in their interpretation of it.
