i actually heard that he went to Sudan.. and that he found out while he was there, something about his wife being pregnant..im not sure if she was close to having the baby, or if there were complications... or if she just found out that she got pregnant..but b/c of this.. he had to rush home... which is WHY he wanted to come back (b/c his trip was ended so abruptly)

Raine went to the middle east and wrote about his trip. he went to some of the really poor places and experienced stuff that they dont show on cnn. "leave the light on" is saying "i'll be back" i mean... who can blame him? if i saw the crap that he saw ... i dont think i could return to this 'paradise' knowing entire communities are living off dirt.

I always thought there was something to do with the military (or some other organization) in this song. "Camouflage(d) with gold. Camouflage being the typical outfit of an American fighter of some kind. So I assumed it was about George Bush and his armies involving themselves in innocent little areas of third world countries and completely ruining them, socially, economically (as though they could be ruined anymore than they already are...) That "d" though makes it camouflageD with gold... so that would perhaps change my story.

On the DualDisk of the new album and there's a feature called "Making of the Album" or something, ike that. On it, Raine said this song was about (and I'm typing this through what I remember he said, so it may not be entierly correct) his trip(s) overseas. He was just sleeping, and when he woke up at the end of the plane ride, everything was different than from home. "leave a light on for me" means that he may return there one day to help the people there again, because he felt like he was abandoning them. he had to leave because he and Chantal had a son.

From ourladypeace.com come the correct lyrics: I fell asleep today, in North Ontario Woke up far away, In a place I didn’t know A woman smiled at me, She said welcome to my home Life is different here she said, it’s not camouflaged with gold Hey, leave the light on for me Hey, leave the light on for me Might not make it home, can’t leave here tonight Not afraid to live, not afraid to die Hey, leave the light on for me Hey, leave the light on for me

Yea, I have the duel sided disk as well. He fell asleep on a plane and woke up in this country, and had to return. Raine felt like he was abandoning these poor people. This song also says how different life is over there... Its not "camouflaged with gold", its very earthly and primative, not covered in man made devices that make life so much easier. It must have been such a culture shock for Raine, visiting these places. I don't blame any body for pittying people in those places. And I have alot of respect for anyone who would be willing to go over there and help people, or even donating money. This song was great in it entirity, The cage was right in saying how it wasn't overproduced, thats what made it such a great song. It has a very sad feeling to it, yet it is a beautiful song. I'm glad that it is no longer than it is as well, I think that since it is such a mellow song it would have gotten boring if the song was and longer then it is, even though it is a pretty short song. Olp rocks, they're the best band out there. ^~

I like how this song wasn't overproduced. It's simplicity in lyric and acoustic setting - just stunning.
