I couldn't find the tabs/chords to this song anywhere, so I decided to try to do it
myself. The chords sound great and the ladies love it; however, any corrections or
additions are welcomed. fiji_nine@hotmail.com (Ross Linscott)
Patrick Park - Something Pretty
(from the O.C. Mix 2)
C G
Here I am, where I've been
Am F
I've walked a hundered miles in tobacco skin
F G Am
And my clothes are worn and gritty
F G Am
And I know ugliness
C G Am
Now show me something pretty
C G
I was a dumb punk kid with nothing to lose
Am F
And too much weight for walking shoes
F G Am
I could have died from being boring
F G Am
As for loneliness
C G Am
She greets me every morning
CHORUS(x2):
C G
At the most I'm a glare
Am F
I'm the hopeless son who's hardly there
Am F
I'm the open sign that's always busted
C G
I'm the friend you need, but can't be trusted
C G
Here I am, where I've been
Am F
I've walked a hundered miles in tobacco skin
F G Am
And my clothes are worn and gritty
F G Am
And I know ugliness
C G Am
Now show me something pretty
CHORUS (x2)

| Agreed that the song is clearly folk and not country, though understand how the less savvy could get confused. Clearly if there's a banjo involved, the song MUST be country! The same logic, then, would apply to Sufjan Stevens and a lot of his work. Stupidity aside, the song is incredible, and easily puts Park on the map through it's OC connections. The song's all about how a man finally realizes his own loneliness and depression has everything to do with his behavior. He can't blame the world anymore when he's the one that shuts them out. Basically, it's my life in a nutshell. | |

| i agree that the song is about someone's crappy life, but i don't think he's looking for a person, necessarily. the lines, "at the most i'm a glare / i'm the hopeless son that's hardly there / i'm the open sign that's always busted / i'm the friend you need, but can't be trusted," makes it sound like his life is crappy because he makes it that way himself. by never being there, being too harsh and defensive ("at the most, i'm a glare"), and untrustworthy, he's made his life empty and boring, and he needs to see something good (something pretty) to help him be less harsh and depressing. | |

| like a lot of people i first heard this on oc mix 2 and i love the sound. it has a beachy feel to it and his voice is soothing. i don't think it's country, it actually reminds me of hawaii but now that i heard what ya'll are saying about country, i can hear that too. all in all this song is great. | |

| Its not as much country as it is folk. Since country stems from folk thats why people say it sounds country. IMO its pretty much folk rock. | |

| I agree with Jakemeiser's first comment. I also think its about someone who has had a very hard life, and he finds someone pretty, and he though he didnt deserve her, and some way or another they broke up, and now he want her back, but still doesnt think he should get the chance. Amazing song though | |

| I do not think it is about someone who finds someone pretty despite not deserving her and then they break up. I think it is about someone with a shitty life who has gone through hell, looking for someone (something pretty) to give him a reason to keep living. It's like "I have seen all the ugly, someone show me something pretty." That's how I see it anyways. | |

| I think the "hundred miles in tobacco skin" is simply a metaphor to how weathered he feels and how far he's traveled in his life, whether it be literal or figurative. It's also a great title for an album - I made a mix of songs meant to be a life soundtrack and titled it "A Hundred Miles in Tobacco Skin." As for the OC - I can't remember the exact episode, but as for the scene...It was near the end of Season one, when Summer is working the kissing booth in the lounge/coffee area, and Cohen stands on top of the table and confronts her in front of everyone to either accept him as her boyfriend or lose him forever. Cheesy, but the song made the moment. | |

| God I love this song, I first heard it on The OC, bought his CD, its terrific, went and saw him in concert, Patrick Park is a genius. I think its about someone that is rough around the edges, he "got nothing to lose" and he has a lot on him "too muchg wait for walking shoes" he is depressed, angry, bitter. And nothing is happening in his life for him "could have died from being boring." People don't pay he too much attention "at the most I'm a glare." His family is either very distant from him or very overbearing on him "hopeless son thats hardly there." He really wants to open up and let someone in, he wants help but he can;t bring himself to show that he needs it. "I’m the open sign that’s always busted." Then even if he lets you in he will test you and hurt you because he is "the friend you need but can't be trusted." I just had a lot to say about this song because its pretty much a biography of my life it desrcibe everything I had gone through and everything I am still going through and the fact that he could convey all that in a song is brilliant to me. | |

| didn't actually hear it on the oc but i heard it on the oc mix 2 cd from my girlfriend... right now we're broken up... maybe get back together eventually, but i'm just hoping she'll show me something pretty. this song is definitely about having a rough life but having/finding someone there for you that you love but maybe dont feel you deserve either. sounds at some points in the song it could be about his mom | |

| My boyfriend is in the army and has spent a lot of time in Iraq. We got together while he was on leave and has since returned to his base out of state. He told me this song reminded him of me because of everything that he has been through and seen and now I'm here. I love him so much. | |
