| At last someone has cottoned on to the fact it is about unrequited love. My mate had it played at his wedding and I couldn't believe it. My ex (who never really liked Weller) used to love it as well, so now I can't bear to listen to it, it hurts too much. Shame really. | |

| I think he wants to tell a girl how much he loves her but he knows that she will never return his love, no matter how long he waits for her : "I'm hanging on the wire; For a love I'll never find". I love this song, it gives me chills... | |

| Hmm, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Mary McCartney (Macca's better looking daughter). She's in the video and PW was supposed to be enjoying a "special" friendship with her at the time. | |

| Funny how there are some songs that you listen to for years without paying them much attention and then something happens in your life that brings the song suddenly and sharply into focus. This is one such song for me. There was a period in my life wen I was absolutely besotted by a woman I'd met. It was as if she'd just flicked a switch on (deep) inside me I knew nothing about which drew up a huge reservoir of feeling toward her. However, my love for her was never recipricated but she kept me hanging on with hope because she (as I found out later) liked the thought of being loved by me but not my love itself. "She'd do something wonderful, then chase it all away" just to string me along, mixing me up in the process as to her real intentions. I would have done absolutely anything for her (even dance through the fire) and the fact that she couldn't let herself feel the same way for me as I felt for her was driving me wild with pain and anxiety. This song encapsulated my entire mood and situation. As the song played and I mouthed the words, I would imagine myself directing them at her, to try and make her understand the depth of my feeling, desparation and agony. There may be other explanations for meanings of this song but this personal one of mine had only one and I'm glad to say that the meaning has faded and that I have other, happier songs to sing now that mean more to me and my present circumstances :-) | |

| This song perfectly captures feelings I have had for someone that are quite unresolved. This is one of those songs I'm glad I discovered. | |

| It's interesting how every one gets something different from this song, depending on one's circumstances. I understand how it may be a song about unrequited love. But for me, I see something much darker and more tragic in this song. I am ending a relationship with someone who has BPD, borderline personality disorder. This song has touched me so deeply during this time. "You do something wonderful, then chase it all away"- this is exactly BPD. Unlike other mental illnesses, these people have moments of clarity when they are genuinely nice people, but then they'll switch--and be mean and emotionally abusive. That's why I like in this song, "I'm waiting for the change". Yes! --waiting to catch that glimmer of normalcy...waiting for the good guy to re-appear. It mixes one's emotions being on the receiving end of such emotional dysregulation. It makes you doubt yourself because they're loving and kind one moment, but later on so cruel and then back to nice, etc.. So which is the real person? "A peace I'll never find" there is no peace, no real normal, healthy love("a love I'll never find") when in a relationship with a BPD. Dancing through the fire (his rages and rants) just to catch a flame (the part of him that is the normal person)...sigh. I cry buckets listening to this song. It's very cathartic. I don't understand how people play this song at their weddings! It is such a tragic song! | |

| The song is about love, yes, but a difficult one. Either the protagonist is in love with another person, and he or she does not love him back, or the protagonist is not getting what they require from the relationship. It's a song of unrequited love and/or affection. The opposite of "Ends of the Earth" | |
