Where Have All The Cowboys Gone - Paula Cole
TUNNING: Standard
INTRO: F#m C#m F#m C#m D E
(N.C.)
Oh you get me ready in your 56 Chevy
Why don't we go sit down in the shade
Take shelter on my front porch
The dandy lion sun scorching,
Like a glass of cold lemonade
G A Bm C#m
I will do laundry if you pay all the bills
CHORUS:
F#m C#m
Where is my John Wayne
F#m C#m
Where is my prairie son
F#m C#m
Where is my happy ending
D E
Where have all the Cowboys gone
REPEAT INTRO
(N.C.)
Why don't you stay the evening
Kick back and watch the TV
And I'll fix a little something to eat
Oh I know your back hurts from working on the tractor
How do you take your coffee my sweet
G A Bm C#m
I will raise the children if you pay all the bills
REPEAT CHORUS
G Bm
I am wearing my new dress tonight
F#m C#m
But you don't even notice me
D E
Say our goodbyes (3 times)
(N.C.)
We finally sold the Chevy
When we had another baby
And you took that job in Tennessee
You made friends at the farm
And you joined them at the bar
Almost every single day of the week
G A Bm C#m
I will wash the dishes while you go have a beer
REPEAT CHORUS
F#m C#m
Where is my Marlboro Man
F#m C#m
Where is his shiny gun
F#m C#m
Where is my lonely ranger
D E
Where have all the cowboys gone

Just to organize the ideas above: This woman met a man who at first seemed to be able to fulfill her dreams and be a "cowboy" in some heroic vision she once held. He actually turned out to be a blue-color nobody who neglects her. And so she wonders where that cowboy of her dreams is.

this song doesn't make sense. i don't understand why she is singing about missing cowboys. cowboys in general, were not nice or respectable people.

I love this song so much and always will. This song is basically singing about a past relationship she had with a man she thought was perfect, that lead Paula to a nervous breakdown. She thought he was a devine being,Like her Knight In Shining Armor. But it turned out he was like any other man.So to describe her pain she used an old cowboy theme. Cowboys were suppose to be chilvarous. But he wasnt. "Where is my John Wayne ?: Refers to her perfect man." "Where is my prairie song ?": Refers to peacefulness and happily ever after. :Where is my happy ending ?": This speaks for itself Where have all the cowboys gone ? Shes basically telling him she'll be the perfect woman, "I will do the laundry.....ect" If he be her perfect man. "If you pay all the bills...ect" But he never did.he didnt even notice she was there. "I am wearing my new dress tonight But you don't, but you don't even notice me Say our goodbyes" So Paula said her goodbyes cause all her illusuions of him were shattered.

This is a really pretty song.. it's one of those things that I can't really relate to that much but it's just pretty and I can still understand it. I don't live in the south or know any cowboys but it paints a pretty picture.

great fantasy for a 5 yr old - and that goes for both guys and girls out there. but yea the meaning is self evident and i agree with hellomynameisdan in saying that even as me being a guy and this is mainly a chick song well it still kicks major ass in my opinion. and yea why isnt she more famous?

i think she might be referring to a marriage that wasn't all she envisioned it to be (i will raise the children if you pay the bills... i guess that's all her husband's good for?) . she's wondering where all the chivilaric - and quite fictitious - cowboys have gone, as she wants to be swept off her feet by one.

It really is, because she is really talented. The whole "This Fire" album is totally amazing. I love her. I really like this song. I used to hate it because I'm from Oklahoma and cowboy allusions get really old. Now, however, I realize what a well written and performed song this is. It's really sad and beautiful.

Definatly one of my more favorite 'chick songs' out there. It kinda has a woman liberation, western theme going on. I always liked it. Despite being a male and all...
