Subject: CRD: Pavement 'Cut Your Hair'
It took me a little while, but I think I finally got the chords for
'Cut Your Hair". I hope every tab-eating alterna-bunny on the net learns
how to play this and it becomes our next alterna-rock national anthem.
It basically goes: D - C - G - E - G - E over and over again. You can
grunge it with power chords or pick it out with open chords.
the breakdown: ----5--|----10---10---10--10| (e)
3------|10----10---10---10--| (b)
the 'solo' 10/////|12/////|12(13)/////|12///// (e)
10/////|12/////|12(13)/////|12///// (b)
^^^^^^^^^^^bend the doublestop a half step
and tremolo pick all of the above.
that's roughly what i figured out, what's they're actually playing is a
little more sophisticated, but not hard to pick up by ear.
so what if i'm a little sarcastic, i honestly think this is a brilliant pop
song. if anyone has any corrections, they're appreciated.

| In going with the "everyone reads the lyrics their own way" idea, I thought I'd let you know some of the ones I read differently: i don't remember lyin' i don't remember a line i don't remember a word but i don't care... which would comment on how the image is more important than the song that the band sings. let's go down to the practice room, tension it fades. a career, korea... this always made me think about how no matter what troubles a band might come up with on the road touring together, once they start playing, it all makes sense. peace | |

| yeah--you'd think it was about the inconsistent and annoying music industry...and how hard it is to maintain a 'career' in that....but, then again, Malkmus will swear he says "korea", not career...that crazy genius... | |

| * advertising looks and chops a must no big hair!! In the early 90s grunge and other alternative was cool and hair metal was no longer. Big hair bands weren't selling. * darlin' don't you go and cut your hair do you think it's gonna make him change? Even though they didn't have big hair, that didn't make them any good; there were still crap bands around. * music scene is crazy, bands start up each and every day i saw another one just the other day * songs mean a lot when songs are bought I agree wholeheartedly with huntmstr: Further, this song is mostly about the crap bands that were popping up everywhere during the post grunge expolsion in the early 90's. It was a statement about the death of glam-rock and insurgence of corporate influenced grunge. * but i don't care, i care, i really don't care did you see the drummer's hair? This is about people caring about image (specific example: hair) and not about music. So I agree with huntmstr, but I also think it's about image and judging by what's on the surface. | |

| steve-o has the lyrics right malkmus' take: "It begins with me iimagining some girl bummed out on her boyfriend. 'What am I going to do?' she's asking herself. 'Cut my hair!' It could be anything, really- whatever you try to do to get a man or woman to like you. It nevers works. Someone's always got the upper hand. The it goes on to how the music world's the same, the way it concentrates on little outside things that seem cool, like your thrift-shop clothes or the amount of stubble you have on your chin. These are the things that seem to make one band different from the next- how long their hair is. It's not mt saying 'Get short hair!' I'm totally into long hair. I'd have it if I could, but it looks bad on me." | |

| I'm pretty damn sure it's "Pretention and Fame's a career." That makes the most sense, really. "Face right down to the practice room" sounds right, and if malkmus mentioned it in an interview, that's probably right. I think actually, that everything seasonedass said is the way I've always thought the song went. | |
