Intro:
A F#m E D A
A
After the glow, the scene, the stage, the set
F#m E
Talk becomes slow but there's one thing I'll never forget,
(E) D A
Hey, you gotta pay your dues before you pay the rent
A
Over the turnstiles and out in the traffic,
F#m E
there's ways of livin', it's the way I'm livin', right or wrong,
(E) D A
it's all that I can do, and I wouldn't wanna let you be.
CHORUS:
Amaj7
I wanna range life,
F#m
If I could settle down,
Bm
If I could settle down,
F#m
Then I would settle down. (play twice, second time go on to:
E E E
Run from the pigs, the fuzz, the cops, the heat,
Pass me your gloves, there's crime and it's never complete,
until you snort it up or shoot it down,
you're never gonna feel free
Out on my skateboard, the night is just hummin',
the gumsmacks are the pulse I'll follow, and if my walkman
fades,
I got absolutely no one, no one but my self to blame.
E D A
Don't worry, were in no hurry
E7 D A
School's out, what did you expect
CHORUS
Out on tour with the smashing pumpkins,
nature kids, I, they don't have no function,
I don't understand what they mean,
and I could really give a fuck.
Stone temple pilots, the elegant bachelors,
they're foxy to me are they foxy to you,
I will agree, it doesn't, absolutely nothin',
nothin' more than me.
Dreamin' and dream dream dream dream, etc...
End on A, for a while.

| not tryin to dis pavement, but why would u directly slag a band in one of your songs, unless of course youre a rapper. What did they have against stp or smashing pumpkins. seems to me pavement might have aproblem with not being as popular as them, so thye talk shit. but what fatkid said, maybe this song was written in a complete different context to what im thinkin. but stp and the pumpkins both kick ass | |

| I've always liked the enjambment wit the line "And if my walkman fades I got absolutely no one no one but myself to blame." Because the kid in the song "out on his skateboard" is someone Malkmus remembers being at one point, and this kid's only real friend is music, and he has low self esteem and blames himself a lot. Or something. | |

| You have to listen to the tone of the lyrics. In case you missed it, it's pretty lazy and laid back. Try to remember it's from the point of view of an aging hippie. Would any other band's name get the same effect though? The tone here certainly isn't insulting, but the aging hippie (not Pavement) is just rambling. | |

| I hear the Pumpkins got Pavement kicked off of Lollapalooza 1994. Totally different aesthetics but not totally different results. Pavement are slackers. | |

| My girlfriend in college loved Smashing Pumpkins and hated Pavement because of this song and rivalry. Needless to say Pavement was/is my favorite band. They were always inspired, if lazy genius over hack technical proficiency. The best, laziest band ever. No, Tina and I didn't fall in love to Pavement, but years later, she's gone, probably a lawyer or some other crap. I'm a professional temp, but I bet I have more fun. And what about STP, they're foxy to me, are they foxy to you? | |

| This is probably the best country-rock song that's not on The Byrds' "Sweetheart of the Rodeo." Even if you don't care much about the Pavement/Pumpkins drama, you can still enjoy the catchy-as-hell melody. | |

| Yeah Smashing Pumkins fucking rule!!!! They were perfectionists and it shows....Pavement obviously aren't perfectionists and it shows in their songs as well, except on their newest Terror Twighlight...seems like they got their act together a bit more. I highly appreciate both bands though. Smashing Pumkins are dreamy and wonderful...Pavement is superb and crafty...both on my top bands list for sure :) | |
