Artist: Pearl jam
Title: Daughter
By: Damo (damo_5@hotmail.com)
Wanna play Duaghter in standard tuning? This is pretty close.
Chords used are:
G (320033), Am7 (302010), A7 (xx2020), Asus7? (xx2030)
Its really important to get the strumming and chord changes right.
Intro and verses and chorus:
G - Am7 - G
G - Am7
G - Am7 - G
G - Am7
When it goes the 'shades go down', on 'down':
Asus7? A7 Asus7? A7
"Down its in her head, painted room" etc...
(make sure you pull off on the B string when changing to A7)
Chorus is the normal G - Am7 - G progression.
After that go straight into the Asus7? - A7 prgression 4 times,
then you'll hear on the A and D strings:
D ------0h2p0--------0h2--------0h2---|
A -2p0---------0h2--------0h2---------|
Then back into Asus7 - A7 progression for "she holds the hand.."
On the "Rise above.." part, back into G - Am7 -G progression and
softly into the chorus, then louder the last two times.
Outro is Asus7? - A7 while singing "the shades go downnnn".
Play soft in the end and fade into this on the D string:
D --2h3p2---2h3p2--etc--
Pretty simple, sounds pretty good, but you've got to get the chord
changes and rhythm right.

| Hey peoples!! Does anyone else out there think that this song is also related to Rearviewmirror!! Seems a little strange to have a line about shades in both songs. Daughter- Shades go DOwn RVM- Finally the shades are raised. Could it be that Eddie is talking about his own battle with dyslexia?? Maybe its just about child abuse? | |

| This song is about dyslexia. In the early 90's this disorder wasnt well known and DAUGHTER is addressing the issue. "Mother reads aloud, child tries to understand, tries to make her proud." Her mother just blames her daughter's problems on a lack of will when instead it is something she cant help. She tries to please her mother but she cant and she doesnt feel fit to be called her daughter. | |
