| Well, I am sure we are going to get plenty of artist's interpretations of 9/11 soon now that musicians have had time to reflect and show their feelings for an event that had such far-reaching consequences. Could this be Eddie Vedder's song about 9/11 and, moreso, how it has forced him and many other people to rethink mortality? ------------ The selfish they're all standing in line Faith in their hope and to buy themselves time Me, I figure as each breath goes by I only own my mind The north is to south What the clock is to time There's east and there's west And there's everywhere life I know I was born And I know that I'll die The in between is mine I am mine ------------------ This part talks about how now he realizes life is too short because it can all go in an instant like all those people who went to work that day and never came back. He wants to live life more fully and not worry about dumb shit from now on. Whereas those lyrics talk about his own personal feelings on 9/11, I think the rest of the lyrics talk about the rest of the country and most of the world in general's response. ---------- And the feeling Gets left behind The innocent Broken with time -------------- Tell me that part can't be used to apply how we all felt our innocence and feelings of innocence were lost on one day? The line of "The ocean is full cause everyone's crying" also hits that message home bluntly and beautifully. So, that's my interpretatino, it's about 9/11. I could be way off, but that's how I see it. | |

| I think the meaning is simple, youare who you make yourself, noone can make you be something you are not... nothing is certain in life except birth and death, it's what you choose to do that makes you who you are... the only thing we own is ourselfs, everything else is temporary, hence "I only own my mind" and "I only know my mind" noone can tell you what you feel, or what to think, "we're all different behind the eyes, there's no need to hide" says don't be ashamed of who you are, everyone is different, noone is better... just my 2cents | |

| yes . i believe individuality is the key element to this song. it's kind of like we're all confined to our own perceptions ... so ultimately though we're constantly surrounded by people we're actually all alone. ("i only know my mind") we'll never have a chance to be someone else, or be inside someone else's mind which makes individuality such isolation. also though, i think it's saying that you should do what you really want with your life instead of letting society and culture guide you. ("the in-between is mind") birth and death are certainties but what you do in the time your alotted should be your own personal choice. | |

| I get the impression this song is also about resignation to the way life is. A kind of "give me the serenity to accept what i cannot change, the courage the change what I can, and the wisdom to know the difference" thing. | |

| This song is truly astonishing! It encompasses everything I love about E.E. Cummings, and Pearl Jam. I mean it's basically Cummings in Vedder's voice. His use of anthimeria, chiasmus and other such devices lead to an equally chaotic and beautiful piece. What I love about PJ is they usually write in well established meters. It's usually iambic and usually about 5 feet. Alexandrines give too much of a hectic feel which is often accidental. In the favorite part cited above, we have very interesting rhymes. Criying/denied, and obviously tide/mind, which are of course near rhymes but rhymes none the less. You could get meaning out of the poem just by reading the rhyme words, and that is the earmark of good poetry. I'm tired, so sorry if that sounded terrible. Thanks for lettin' me practise for my Poetry midterm! | |
