I'd just like to point out that this is no new Pearl Jam song. They've had this song for quite a while, and used it live oftenly. They've just now, come to record it. I know for a fact that it was before the time of 9/11.

great sonG! finally some new material from PJ! ok i think the song is about how people lives theire livers like without thinking of really what they are doing and just caring for the future and stuff. he have to live our lives coz that the one thing we are sure we have here "I know I was born, And I know that I'll die, The in between is mine" and i think it also reffers of losing people we love "The ocean is full cause everyone's crying, The full moon is looking for friends at high tide."..thats 4 me is how the poeple who died see us form heaven or smthng like that well that was my interpretetion..

This song is so obviously about religion and the search for a meaning of life. The first stanza is about religious people using religion as a way to buy themselves an afterlife. In this way, they are selfish. But eddie knows that the only sure meaning or religion is in his own mind. So he is saying "i am mine. I am my meaning of life. I make my life have meaning." His mind is the only thing he has any real control over, so he makes his onw meaning of life. It's a song about the futility and falibility of religion.
