	I think in this song the "tree" would be life at the current time. he is safe in away from the abuse and pain of his past "no more crowbars to my head", how he lost his innocence due to the abuse he experienced as a child. Now, he has distanced himself, he has grown up , healed or started to and can look back on it and maybe regained some of what was stolen form him. He found or is finding who he is, but at the same time fears falling back into the old habits and issues. "Up here so high the boughs they break. "

	I like #1 from PJ10 a lot, but Im going with #2 as the meaning they are try to convey. Either way the tree sounds like a nice place.

	someone i met once played this on his guitar-incidentally when he was very high!-but the song does not=simply getting high and is not just about a girl up a tree.... what i heard played was closer to the DVD version; i later heard a live recording and didnt realise it was so different-I think its nice even just with one acoustic. Id never heard a pearljam song before this-in my tree got me interested in them. the guy who played it really liked them and now its all starting to make sense why-thank you everyone for explaining it I love the idea of seeing the ground below from up high in a tree-like seeking refuge-like seeing where others cant-where nobody can touch you-where nothing disturbs you-the media, the news, the things in society that are so absurd, which you long to get away from- its sad that his friends dont seem to be able to notice him-its a beautiful experience being up high but it is also extremely lonely; -and then there are some that would probably protest by saying that trees were never meant to be climbed... anyway, I like this song :)
