INDIFFERENCE - PEARL JAM (VERSES)
------------
that riff that keeps appears is the following
e-------------------------------------------
B-------------------------------------------
G------9---7--------------------------------
D--------------9---7------------------------
A----------------------9-10-9---7-----------
E-------------------------------------------
it shows up in different forms through out the song
the first two time's it is played straight but after that it is played
with added slides, bends, hammers and pulloff's and a few extra notes
My abilities do not allow me to pick off each one. So improvise!

SONG: INDIFFERENCE from Vs.
ARTIST: Pearl Jam
TAB BY: Neil Smith (nj2_smit@uwe.ac.uk)
Hi all! I haven't seen any good tab floating around for this one, so
I thought I'd send my version, having finally got post working !!!
Notation: (Please pay attention, 'cos I'm not using brackets () for their
usual purpose !)
h - hammer on
p - pull off
/ - slide up
- slide down
b - bend string
(7) - natural harmonic ring (in this case, fret 7)
Here's the main riff. It's for the bass, although no-one can stop you
playing it on guitar :)
-----(5)---------(7)-----
-------(7)---------(7)---
--7-----------5----------
-7-----------5-----------
There, that was easy. Then after the first verse, the guitar plays:
-------------------------------------------------
17---15------------------------------------------
---------16---14---------------------------------
------------------16-17/19--17-------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
It's either that, or
12---10------------------------------------------
---------12---10---------------------------------
------------------11-12/14---12------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
I can't tell. Oh well, they sound virtually the same, but the second one's
easier on an acousic. Well it is on _my_ acousitc :)
For the 2nd chorus onwards, I think (listen to the song!), and in various
places later, the bass plays :
----(12)--------(7)---------(5)---------(5)------
------(12)--------(7)---------(7)---------(7)----
--10------5------------7-----------7----------
10----------------------7-----------7------------
The other guitar riff which crops up later is:
---------15-------------------------
17p15-------------17p15-------------
------16-------16-------16-16----16- Play This
------------------------------------ Part Twice
------------------------------------
------------------------------------
------------------------------------
15---17---19b20b19---15--17---------
------------------------------------
------------------------------------
------------------------------------
------------------------------------
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This plays the second time round. Listen to the record and
you'll see what I mean.
^You can also play this as 14b15b14 on top E.
I think that's just about it.
Some lyrics: (I think ...)
INDIFFERENCE
------------
I will light a match this morning,
So I won't be alone.
Watch as she lies silent,
But soon light will be gone.
Oh, I will stand arms out-stretched,
Pretend I'm free to roam.
Oh, I will make my way through one more day in hell.
How much difference does it make? ...
I will hold the candle
'Til it burns up my arm
Oh, I'll keep taking punches
Until their will grows tired
Oh, I will stare the sun down
Until my eyes go blind
Yeah, I won't change direction and I won't change my mind
How much difference does it make? ...
I'll swallow poison until I grow immune
I will scream my lungs out 'til it fills this room
How much difference ...
How much difference does it make?
Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Neil ....

| I was feeling really down today, I dont think the pain was as extreme as this song is talking about. But the feeling of having pain and not finding away out of it...but you just have to keep going "I will keep taking punches" " I will make my way through one day in hell" Like bruce lee said " be like water my friend...just got to keep on flowing" peace | |

| Without a doubt, its a love song, with the same basis as Porch: about losing a loved one and trying to deal with that. I have gone through a hell of a breakup with a girl in the past month and nothing makes more sense to me then this song when I am thinking about our breakup. | |

| This is, without a doubt, pearl jam's best song. and i'm a fan. Personally, Ten is the best album to ever be released (no pun intended), but Vs. is second best but still special. This song is kinda like their 'stairway' (an epic, dramatic, emotional rock masterpiece), yet it is very anti-rock. It's the antithesis of what a grunge newb or grunge hater would expect-it's sparse and quiet. Featuring only keyboards and organs instead of guitars (they'res bass), and having one of Vedder's crowning vocal moments (which is saying something.....), it is nonetheless brilliant. The song is a story of a relationship on the edge-either the couple could break up like that, or the person who eddie has a point of view of could work really hard and save it. Just reading these lyrics isn't enough to imagine the incredible atmosphere of the song-for all looking at this song with a slight predjudice against grunge, YOU NEED TO HEAR THE SECOND BLOCK OF LYRICS UP THERE. more than that, the keyboards that play after the first chorus are incredibly somber and catchy...and the lyrics...christ, what more can be said. the only concievable problem could be that it really is a bit anticlimactic. BUT WHO CARES WHEN IT'S THIS GOOD? all in all, it should be the most treasured song in the PJ library. | |

| For me it's about someone who's quite stubborn and cannot be influenced by what others think about the way he chose to go. Someone who is abondened by his friends and family maybe for that way he chose. But still - he is standing there, takes their punches as long as it will take until they will stop to come down on him. He will not unlight the candle of his own will and direction, even if it means he will get hurt, he's staring the sun down even if his eyes will get blind, swalling the shit they put on him until it doesn't hurt him anymore. For me all that means he will make his way and stand behind his decision - whatever he will have to face and to go through. What they do does not make any difference to him and his way. That's encouraging. | |

| It's not that I can place this song into any particular life situation but whenever I listen to it it gives me a feeling of a warm dark place. Like a womb. Where nothing can hurt you and nothing makes a difference. | |

| As a true fan of this site, I'm really impressed I didn't find an opinion like mine about this music. It's not that my interpretation about it is correct, actually I'm not really good on finding meanings for songs, and it's probably wrong. I just like to read other people's interpretations about them and usually agree to some, and am pleased to see different and interesting opinions from others. Anyway, I think this song is about losing a loved one and all the pain it comes on these situations, and how you're suffering and fighting against it all, while you still have hopes of her getting back to you. You won't give up, you won't change your mind, you'll wait and try as hard as possible to get her back to you. Your life is just a hole different without her. I don't know about the title, maybe Eddie wanted to be sarcastic and it's how your beloved one treats you, with indifference. LOL, how far am I? | |
