song is off Pearl Jam's album "Riot Act". It's Called Love Boat Captain. A very fun song

THe way this song introduces itself and the way it crescendoes into "is this just another phase" is so amazing... Eddie's voice basically delivers this song to it's climax .... I love this song so much... Pearl Jam Owns all that can be owned... It's already been sung, but it can't be said enough....;)

LBC refers to the highest being of creation. The author of love. If God is not in the forgotten place, where there is death, love boat captain- maybe Jesus, stirs us towards the clear. It's an art to live in pain is similar to love is self-sacrifice. Am I right Mr. Eddie Vedder???????????

Riot act seems like an album that very gradually becomes awesome the more you listen to it, i have not got to this stage yet, however, this song is instantly wonderful in every way.

I totally agree with Meithan. Great interpretation, thanks. I suppose the line on the Roskilde accident could be a sort of "commemoration", but it could also want to say that (as WildFlower wrote) if people would understand what love really means in our lives, things like that wouldn't happen.

At First, i thought it was just another song about love...but this kinda threw me off "lost nine friends we'll never know, two years ago today and if our lives became too long, would it add to our regret?" hmm?

This song, I think, was most likely written as a tribute to the 9 people trampled to death in a stage rush at the Roskilde music festival in Denmark on the last day of the European leg of the 2000 Binaural Tour. "Lost 9 friends we'll never know two years ago today." It is also about receiving guidance or direction towards a positive lifestyle from a higher power, I think. Very powerful song, probably the best on "Riot Act."

to me the key is this (and I think it's very profound): to the universe, I don't mean a thing but there's just one word I still believe, and it's "love" it's Eddie's realization as a humanist that the only thing that matters is human love...because to the universe we don't mean a thing...but to each other we do matter...

I love the powerfull and somewhat angry line: trying to shake the cancer off, stupid human beings does anyone have an interpretation on what he means by this??

"i know it's already been sung, it can't be said enough love is all you need... all you need is love love, love..." he's quoting the beatles. too obvious? the message of this song is clear. there's not much to interpret.

the song has definite intense meaning, but people, without the underlying thoughts, the song is still unbelievable. Riot Act is the most under rated album ever and so is this song under rated. People, will you please listen!

This is one of my favourite Pearl Jam songs. It's about love. Period. But it goes beyond romantic love, which is pretty much all pop singers write about nowadays. When I first listened to this song I had good old memories of Live, a very spiritual band that has been singing about love and what defines us as human beings for a long time. Love Boat Captain is powerful yet simple in its message. "It's an art to live with pain, mix the light into grey". Can more truth be said in a single line?

Teibest, I have to disagree with you. I love Pearl Jam, but there are some very dodgy songs on Riot Act. The beginning and the end are pretty good, but the songs in the middle are...not up to scratch for a band we know can do such great stuff.

my favourite song off Riot Act, LBC refers to the nine PJ fans killed in the Roskilde incident. Obviously an emotional moment for eddie and the band if they choose to write a song about it and include it in the album. the song also touches on the ignorance of the young people of today, when compared to the older generation who have life experience under their belt. (and tyhe young they can lose hope cos they cant see beyond today/ the wisdom that the old cant give away) all in all LBC tells that, no matter what happens in the world or what state the world is in, love will inevitably conquer all. (NB: Pearl Jam Australian Tour was absolutely insane)
