What a great song! If you're down, you need someone to pick you up. I think Eddie got help from a lot of people throughout his life. And he probably was reluctant to let them help. Now he's writing this song, and what a great song it is.

This is about Mike's drug addiction and the band/Eddie wanting to help him out. It's ironic that my friend who got me into Pearl Jam in the first place has been going downhill with drugs... Gunna sit him down with this song..maybe..

"and fuck me if you only hear the tremble in your head " I think that's meant to be "and fuck me if you only hear trouble in your head " There's often that point where half the relationship is being a psycho bint and causing loads of problems because they're miserable for being miserable sake and taking it out on the wrong person. Their insecurities, their history etc all gets thrown in your face, and really is that yours to deal with? No, they just need to sort themselves out and stop being idiotically insane. oops.

I think this is about Mike McCready's former drug addiction, and Eddie wanting to help him.
