This song definetly has a "Porch" vibe to it. Except its much deeper. I always thought that it was about a guy that started taking drugs after his wife left him (hence the wedding ring).

So you got my suicide theory, but there may be one other explanation: The guy MAY have murdered and / or dismembered his wife / girl (etc) after either tripping himself on drugs or after doing drugs with her. It feels to me like he was drugged up on his own and in that state killed his wife. BUT...."recognized it from the wedding band"....don't MEN usually just wear the band?? I know women wear both, but that kinda got me thinkin' that it was HIS hand. Either way, clear message: DONT DO DRUGS OR YOU WILL DO STUPID SHIZZNIT WHILE TRYING TO REACH SUPPOSED ENLIGHTENMENT. Instead, grab a Bible and you'll so enough learn what is human and what is more.

I wanted to be original and make a comment on the similarity of this riff and the SLTS one,,... So much for that lol,.. It's a surefire rocker thats for damn sure,... How in the hell can the song be "too fast paced"? this song is fuckin awesome!

This is the best song on the new album. It just plain out rocks, and is now one of my favorite PJ songs ever. I think it amazing that PJ still is making great songs after all these years. Pearl Jam, quite simply, are the best band out there.

It seems to me that this song is pretty obviously about psychedelic drug use, like LSD or peyote. Heres evidence: "Got some kicks, wanna take a ride?" --> kicks = hits, ride = trip "...leave yourself behind" --> hallucinagens sometimes give the sensation of being outside your body "tried to walk, found a severed hand...recognized it by the wedding band" --> he can't walk right, he sees his hand, but is outside it, "severed" from it, and he only recognizes that it is his by the wedding ring "you'll see dragons after 3 or 4" --> hallucinations "the rooms taller now" --> spatial perception shifts "I see the sound in waves" --> experience of synaesthesia (i.e. tasting shapes, smelling colors, etc.) caused by psychedelics "If i don't lose control explore not explode" - often users of hallucinogens panic when their world starts to desolve. he realized that he must keep control and not explode "a preternatural other plane" --> reference to the transcendent journey he in undergoing "once dissolved we are free to grow" --> a hippie idea, on the same page as Timothy Leary, that humans can reach spiritual freedom when the mental filters that structure our world are broken down in addition to all this, the picture that accomplanies the lyrics in the album seems to fit along the lines of transcendence, mental/spiritual freedom altogether, a great song

it depends what drugs... weed should definitely be legal, but everything else could easily kill you... and how many people do you think would actually use them "responsibly" if that is how eddie feels than i will have to stray from the norm and disagree with him... imagine being able to go in2 cvs and ask for some heroin...fuck that

"This is a song about psychotropics" - Eddie Vedder I think this song expresses the band's views on drugs, that they should be legal if used respobsibly ("If i don't lose control/explore and not explode/a preternatural other plane/with the power to maintain") It also explains how drugs can help you see things from a different perspective and help you understand and grow as a person (when used responsibly and in moderation) "like a tear in all we know, once dissolved wer are free to grow"

I don't think Eddie feels drugs have to be made legal and I don't think there is any mention here. The song definetely talks about drugs, probably about Eddie's experiences with them (probably marihuana mostly) and how it made them feel at certain point in his life...

I'm not sure so don't take this to heart but my first thought is a man is at a party of a sort with his wife and starts to take some stuff with his wife. She passes out, he takes some more and starts hallucinating, again just my ideas:P great song though, not th ebest of the album. little too fastpaced.

I've decided to retrac tmy statement of this song being too fast paced...I actually didn't realize how good the song really was, i stand by it not being the best of the album though, come back and possibly parachutes are tied for that spot... It just took me a while to get hitched to this song like, do the evolution and love_boat_captain.

Of course, as Eddie himself has mentioned, this song is about hard-core drug use (and sorry, its not exploring the high you get from weed in my opinion). I think this much is obvious. As in most PJ songs, you hafta consider the IMPLICATIONS. To me, its all summed up in "Oh please understand I just need my friend--a way home"... The drug user in this song longs for enlightenment; for his mind to be free. Drug use is one way to pursue this, however, its affects are misleading. It provides false-truth (although for a while it was pretty damn convincing). The man is left confused, depressed, and on-the-verge of loosing control. He's no longer getting comfort from the drugs... In my opinion, HE SLIT HIS OWN WRIST. He's commiting suicide--i think half-willingly and half secondary to insanity from drug use. He takes comfort, however, in finally obtaining his answers---HIS TRUTH---when he gets HOME: the other side, that is. There, he will learn the difference between what is HUMAN and what is more. An eerie yet AWESOME song and an overall formidable album that easily is in the top 3 best. I like how eddie stated it: "If Pearl Jam were an old muscle car, THIS album is the newly rebuilt engine". Kick ass riffs, thoughtful / REAL lyrics, longing for love to conquer all....well done, PJ. Well done.

so, this is my favorite song on this album....though life wasted and gone are close. i'd have to completely agree with the statements by t-crash and richie8092…pearl jam is definitely going down in history as one of the greatest rock bands. this song is AMAZING live.

I like the point of the song where everything slows down- directly relating the song to drugs. The same thing happens in Life Wasted. It adds a Pink Floyd weirdness to the song, which makes it much cooler.
