Riff-A-
dear unlock the door
you're acting like a child
when you've said it to yourself
we are at war
how dare you turn on me now
right when i need you most
i wish i could have seen their faces when they heard the news
now that's the sort of smack that leaves a bruise
the victory is ours at last
i beat them at their own dirty game
they pervert the words of godly men
for their own selfish gain
i took their wrong and i took their lies
and i made them right, i made them right
oh, look who it is
it's my supportive wife
and she thinks she's going to squeal
hey where do you think you're going?
don't you walk away from me
Riff-B-
you put down that telephone
you're not calling anyone

| hey.. i agree wth you guys. specially about the label deal. david's stuff applies to everyone. and before anyone at all tries to start an arguement about pedro i think they should go listen to magazine. i've read interviews of david's before, and when he talks about his christian fan base, he's said something to the likes of, most of the christian church is as bad as the pharisees back in the day... i think that's a reason why alot of people are so eager to pick a fight. | |

| Ok. a little bit about Pedro the Lion. First: He is a Christian. and he does talk about christianity. But he doesn't preach it to you under a hot spotlight. He talks about real life issues and tried to solve them with his faith. Not like other christians band that are about "i love God, God loves me yea God" He doesn't try to sugar-coat the message. His music is suppose to make you uncomfortable. It's suppose to make to you think. Second: Pedro the Lion is ONE person. David Bazan. he does all the instruments on the albums and has friends help him out during live shows. Pedro the Lion WAS a group. But all the members left because they wanted to be "another christian rock band" Third: Most of his album are concept albums. Meaning loosely the album is a story. the tracks are chapters. you have to listen to the whole album to hear what he's talking about. Hope this clears stuff up. David Bazan is the man. | |

| It seems as tho the album does have a happy ending - for the drunken brother. He won't have to live in the shadow of his brother anymore, and one of the last lines of the album talks about how he now has a 'second chance'. | |

| Fredrick: I completely agree with you. What I was saying is that just because Bazan mentions God in his lyrics, and is a christian, his band is labeled as a "CHRISTIAN BAND" when Pedro is so much more than that. He doesn't preach, he doesn't try to force his religion on other people, his songs are like .. like .. big questions of faith and how to live within the confines of a religion. Atleast to me. I find it odd that you so mistook my comment. Perhaps you should reread it? | |

| David Bazan: "I was still coming up with ideas for songs, and with Winners Never Quit, it was very specific and based heavily on certain events. This song was written because this event needed to happen. This is the confrontation song and the killing song. The lyrics for three of the eight songs from this album were written after all of the music was recorded. This was one of them. I wrote these lyrics the night before we mixed the record. Two other songs were written after the record has been mixed. While we were mixing I wrote the lyrics “Eye on the Finish Line” and “Bad Things to Such Good People”. ”A Mind of Her Own” was written the night before the mixdown, and I was just trying to finish all the tracking. That meant vocals, and vocals meant lyrics. I was writing the lyrics and recording the vocals simultaneously. It was a pretty furious process. I started really building a lot of momentum and by the end my voice was pretty blown out. I would’ve re-cut that last vocal, but I didn’t have any voice left, literally. I was pretty fortunate because I had been thinking about this song a lot, but I didn’t have the courage to really commit pen to paper until I was forced to. But because I had been thinking about it a lot, I had a lot of stored subconscious information about it. So, when it came time my subconscious had already done a lot of the work for me, as far as realizing what moments to jump to. Right away in the song, you’re skipping all the confrontation that originally happens and it sort of implies that. She’s already in the bathroom and he’s already making threats before he goes back and sort of recounts. This song also develops his character a bit more during the recounting because he’s so arrogant and so maniacal. I really have fun singing this one. It’s sort of embarrassing sometimes because people perceive the last verse as being my voice. Those are certainly not my thoughts or ideas, but when I get into his mind a little bit there’s a lot of really pleasurable tension. " | |

| Ummm...tobenut85 The album is actually about two brothers. One a crokked politician and the other a drunken screwup. The album is a pointed tale about how "success" doesn't necessarily lead to salvation. It's the drunken brother who get's pulled over by the cops and says "he's been such a good example" and "brother sat me down very graciously and explained if i'm going to help you i must make it very clear brother that i love you ". He doesn't want his brother (the politician) to be embrassed by his drunkenness. It's the politician who kills his wife and thereby, ironically, shaming the Family Name. That's why at the end, the father cries "but lord i've always done what's right ". This album is fantastic and David Bazan is one of the most amazing lyricists and songwriters I've ever heard. | |

| To punkkills: Read any interview with Pedro (David Bazan). He is not out to convert the world or shove the gospel in anyone's face, but he will be the first to state his faith has significant impact on his songwriting. This does not mean every song is based around that or that Pedro is a "christian band". Again, any interview states he does not want to be categorized, but simply wants to create and tell stories through his songs in a manner that makes the listener reflect. And this is what makes Pedro so stunningly beautful is the brutal honesty with which he tells these stories and how he doesn't hesitate to address the deep, dark secrets that every man (woman) hides within the confines of his (her) heart. Although I agree that it sometimes makes me sad that fundamentalists try to bend people like Bazan and art he creates into their boxed concept of christianity, your statement itself seems prejudiced. | |

| Everyone, listen to me. You have to listen to the entire CD of "Winners Never Quit". It is one big Story. Each song tells a part of the story. In the first song, "Slow and Steady wins the race" A Politician is very selfcentered. You then learn that he is involved in a Political scam in "Simple Economics". On is way home to his house one night he gets drunk and is pulled over in "To Protect The Family Name". His wife then finds out about the scam and threatens to tell in "Mind of her Own". Then in "Never Leave a Job Half None" he kills his wife. Then in "Eye On the Finish Line" he is sad and wants to repent for his sin. In "Bad Things to Such Good People" he is in jail and everyone is dissapointed in what he has done - Everyone except God - God Forgives him. Then in "Winners Never Quit" the man is telling other people that even if you screw up to not quit. He wants everyone to know that God will forgive them. Whew!! Not that that is over with do you see that this is christian. You have to listen to the whole CD. It is pure genious!!! Thanks | |

| I'm sorry tobenut.... but creole is right. His line "martyrs never have a say" from "winners Never quit" shows that he's about to kill himself. and notice that his brother's jail shoes are on "the well kept cemetary lawn" in "bad things to good people". This is the drunk brother at his brother's funeral. The reason everybody is in great torment is b/c this was the "good son" who jsut died, and they cant believe what he did. this album does not have a happy ending. | |

| Related actually to "Never leave a job half done": Think about this; He has killed his wife and his last thoughts before "Eye on the Finish Line" (where he kills himself) are "she almost ruined everything"... these are his last thoughts after killing his wife, other than if only he could've pulled off the lie! Bazan is so brilliant on this song and yet this isn't even the best part.... he ends the song with the little be-bop after the ultimate display of moral decay! I love this guy! | |
