ALMOST THERE
by PEDRO THE LION

INTRO: E Am Am7 x2

E
At least in my dreams
Am Am7
when I'm sleeping it seems
E Am Am7 C#m
that the needle is full endlessly, but you keep on waking me.

B F#m
I'm almost there, it's on the tip of my tongue
A Am E Am Am7
and it never goes away, it never comes to stay.

E
The chances are slight
Am Am7
that I won't shoot up tonight,
E Am Am7 C#m
but the sensation that's waiting beneath is a kick in the teeth.

B F#m
I'm almost there, it's on the tip of my tongue
A Am C#m
and it never goes away, it never comes to stay.
B F#m
I'm almost there, it's on the tip of my tongue
A Am C#m B F#m
and it never goes away, it never comes to stay,
A Am C#m
and it never goes away.

this is a great song. I think it is more about making the turn to God for help with his addiction, rather than just being about herion addiction. Okay, is it just me, or does anyone else almost feel hypocritical for listening to PTL out of sheer pleasure of the music? Like, sometimes I listen to it and feel really ungodly and dirty. Am I alone here?

I love this song.. it was always my favorite on Whole. I always wanted to shoot a video for this song, where a scared/timid looking David is driving his car singing the regular part while a scarey/aggressive David is sitting next to him screaming in his face during the parts that are screamed. The timid David blinks and tries not to look at the mean David. It's this whole duality concept I have in this song--it comes with all addictions. you have the hungry aggressive side that says more, more more, then you have the scared side who wants out.

Pemberley, as a fellow Christian, I completely respect your views and understand where you're coming from. At the same time, though, when I hear words like yours, I can't help but wonder certain things. And I don't mean to undermine anyone's viewpoints; I just can't understand them. And that's probably just my views on life getting in the way. Discernment is a big part of my everyday mentality, but it's not to judge what I should expose myself to; it's what messages are positive and what ones aren't. And I gain positive things from both. In my eyes, all art is beautiful, because humans create it, and humans and everything about them (even their sins!) are inherently beautiful. In this sense, anything humans create is divinely inspired, because God dwells in all of us, whether we acknowledge it or not. So even if lyrics, on the surface, are disrespectful and dishonoring to God, they truly honor God. In reference to the Philippians verse, to me, just about everything non-contradictory to natural law, in its own morbid way, can be true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable. Maybe it wasn't intended to be, but I guess I've gotten myself to the point where I can see Christ in everyone and everything, including evil deeds and evil people. There's something vaguely beautiful about the sin/redemption cycle, even without redemption, and that's why I love bazan's lyrics. I probably sound like a hippie, but I often wonder why most Christians see so much evil in this world that's to be avoided, when I see so much beauty. If a song brings about an inclination toward sin in oneself, by all means, avoid it. But I just can't understand how so many people can't turn that stumbling block (romans 14!) into a stepping stone.

David Bazan: "This song started out a bit different. It was made up of very general references to dissatisfaction and angst. And then in the context of the Whole EP, I changed some of the references to heroin. I was feeling really frustrated with certain elements of my life. This song is literally just an expression of that point in time. The specific lyrics themselves were never really the point. It was more about the tone and mood of the song. "

this is a really great song. the screams really add to it. whoever is screaming does a really good job...it almost sounds like they are crying or sobbing. the lyrics are really scary. "and it never goes away / it never comes to stay" it almost seems like battling an invisible enemy or something like that. i wonder if this is autobiographical or not. anyone have an answer to that? this is definitely my new favorite pedro the lion song.
