| My jail shoes on The well kept cemetery lawn Both of them weeping Their one good son now was gone The irony to see my dad down on his knees Crying out to Jesus But Lord, I've always done what's right this means alot to me i think it means the person who was singing commited suisice like there was something holding him down (his jail shoes) he felt trapt or over welmd his parents never really did appreciate or care him thats why it was ironic for him to see his dad on his knees crying out to jesus | |

| Taking into account the context of the song as a part of the story of the album, I've heard a lot of interpretations of this song that fit in perfectly with the story. I believe that the "good christian" brother killed himself in "Eye On the Finish Line" when he said "It's strange that it should end this way, but martyrs never have a say" since he is so self-righteous, it would make sense that he'd call himself a martyr while committing suicide. So in this song I think of the "bad brother" just out of jail (since you don't go to jail that long for a DUI) and in his jail shoes, watching his parents in hysterics at his "good christian" brother's funeral. And as for "All the while the good lord smiles, and looks the other way" It either embodies a feeling of betrayal on the Lord's part--that feeling of "this is so wrong, why isn't God helping me?"--or it's saying that it's all part of God's plan so he is simply looking the other way. I prefer the former theory. | |

| This song is amazing. Bazan's lyrics are always awesome. The thing that makes the song for me is the acoustic acompaniment. It just fits the mood of the song so well. I kind of wish he would have stayed with the acoustic guitar and drums style instead of fully "plugging in" like on control. I'm no hippy, but i think the more minimalist style of "hard to find.." and "winners never quit" fit his songs better. I'm probably wrong though | |

| Lol Structure because we can classify EVERYTHING into neat little boxes to make our world a better place can't we? Record companies putting every band into a certain genre is stupid and insulting to the band. | |

| wow.. this song is definatly about the futility of trying to strive on your own. you will fail. david bazan is even using biblical refrences to when the man has tried to strive without god. the golden calf line frome when the isrealites made a golden calf while moses was geting the ten commandments, the were punished and the tower of babel. when he says it just wasn't in me. i could not fine stength to save my life. he showing how each and everyone of us is imperfect to the point wher no one can get anywhere by themselves.. and yes i agree david bazan is a genious. | |

| I guess I kinda got a different meaning from this song... I think the good son was only the good son to the Parents. He was thier trophy and they kinda ignored Bazan or whoever he's singing about thinking he was not as good as the "perfect son" (thats why he felt like he had jail shoes on cause they made him feel less immportant) And the lord only smiles cause he sees that they (the parents) are learning a lesson that thier other kid is just as immportant and good. Don't ya just hate it when ya don't know for sure the meaning of your favorite songs?? :) I Feel this way about allot of Pedro's songs and Bright Eyes... | |

| I'm so damn sick of people calling Pedro the Lion a "christian rock" band. David Bazan is a Christian. He sings about religion. Does that mean he's Christian rock? NO! He happens to sing about people and issues that relate religion, love, business and politics together from a very human perspective, regardless of personal beliefs. | |

| the guitar on this is just awesome, just the amount of feeling it holds on about when everything you've built up everything you've depended on, believed comes down on you. this song may not have much hope, but its sure holds the dispair of everything failing on you amazingly.. | |

| To me, this sounds like classic Cain and Abel. Cain killed his brother Abel out of jealousy because Abel's offerings to God were better than Cain's. The song talks about how he tried his best to make them proud (i.e. his offerings weren't the better of the two). Also, the song mentions the irony of his father calling out to Jesus. God booted Adam out of the Garden of Eden for disobeying his one rule for Adam and Eve. It's ironic because he calls out to the same God he betrayed. I think the last verse talking about golden children and towers might be an allusion to the Tower of Babel but it still makes sense in the context of Adam and Eve. The part about God turning the other way describes how Adam and Eve feel. They think that this is their payback for betraying God. I don't think Brazan feels this, but rather the chorus is sung from the perspective of Adam and Eve, losing their one good song. | |

| The line is correct as "my jail shoes on". The narrator or rather the "evil" brother is now in jail. I always wonder how the good son died. But yeah this is the most touching song on the album for me and probably one of my favorite PTL songs of them all. The lyrics are good but they are nothing wtihout the music. You can feel so much emotion in his guitar. | |

| "And all the while The good Lord smiled And looked the other way" when i saw bazan live a few months ago someone asked him what he exactly meant by these lyrics, and he said that he himself wasn't even really sure. personally, i dont think he is saying there is no god, rather saying people invest too much in some higher power and take it all way too seriously. | |
