Bad Boys don't have girlfriends. He might be trying to fit in with the bad boys, so he broke her heart. There is a side of him that wishes to be a bad boy, but a side that really wants someone to love, and to be a good boy. The bad boy is free, but the good boy is free fallin'

I think that it's a song about him killing himself over a girl he broke up with. I mean "there's a freeway runnin' through the yard ".For him to jump off of and free fallin when he jumps.

ya, i dont agree with druggie. why? because he is forgetting what this music is all about. people arent "fucking posers" because they misinterpret a song. people often forget that the song means whatever you want it to mean. who cares if its secretly about drugs, its however you want to interpret it. and this pettyfreak dude who just posted. are you saying that i need to carefully inspect the lyrics of a band that i like before i can call myself a fan? i dont know about you buddy, but i think its pretty safe to say that if you had to study the lyrics of a song to be a fan, most bands wouldnt have 1/1000th of the fans. so what im saying is its not what pettyfreak said: "i guess you can only relate if you are a 'druggie' yourself" relate to the song in your own way, and if it sounds good, and you like it, then consider yourself a fan.

You guys are taking this way too seriously. Don't insult people just because they have liked a song for a long time and don't know what it means. People can like songs because of the SOUND, you know, not just because they've totally analyzed the hidden meanings.

To me, this song is about ending a relationship with someone that even though you cared about the person you're happy to be out of it and just the joy of knowing that you are free from it.

umm. obviously she's a good girl. it says so in the first freaking line. but in response to spontaneity, i really think that's what it was. he came up with the first two lines and built a story out of that. good girl easily brings up the idea of a bad boy. the end.

Ok, for one most of you people that have written in reply to this song are a bunch of fucking posers. You have loved this song since 3rd grade yet you don't know what it's about. it's about a guy that has a girl who is "a good girl" and he's the one taking drugs that makes him a "bad boy". When he says he's "free fallin'" and when he states that "I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart " he's stating that he's overdosing. so basically its about a guy who is doing drugs b/c he is unable to maintain reality.

i don't question the drug overdose theory...but don't you think maybe though that it's about kids going out with each other and you shouldn't be worrying about long term relationships...it's about having fun...falling free...do what you want. But then again...Druggie...you sound like you're right.

Well I 100% say shes a good girl. I think he's saying hes now a bad boy for breaking her heart and and for not missing her but the real point he is trying to say is that his friends are bad boys but hes really trying to act bad in front of his friens although he really loves this girl.

i think everyone who wrote in to this with a theory has been right. and before i read all of yours i had absolutely NO idea what this song was about, but now ive stolen some of your ideas and this is what i think this song is about: the boy in it is bad. hes dating a "good girl", and even though hes dating her he keeps doing drugs and all that bad stuff. and now hes done too many drugs ie is overdosing and it feels like hes free falling, bc hes dying and he doesnt even feel bad that his death is going to break his good girlfriends heart. i dont know thats what it means to me but it can mean different things to different people.

i think this might be one of the most misapplied songs ever. it seems to me that he is saying that he is glad that he broke up with his girl although she did nothing wrong. i don`t think most people seem to get that when they listen to this song. i see it as bittersweet at best, but many seem to see it as a song about real freedom and independents.

i agree with druggie, i guess you can only relate if you are a "druggie" yourself. but whoever thinks tompettys songs are all about drugs. you shouldnt even be a petty fan then. im not saying that he doesnt do drugs or even right songs about it, just not all of them. thanks

i guess the free falling could b refering to not being tied down to a long term relationship and having fun while you're young, but i stll think it means being happy to be out of a relationship that...Druggie420s meaning is right too...Petty's lyrics can b interpreted in alot of ways

I have a tape of an interview with tom about how this song was written and it explains how a roadie bought tom a keyboard that tom didnt really want and the roadie told tom that if he wrote one song with it, that it would pay for itself. tom played the 5 opening chords to Jeff Lynne one night. Jeff told him to sing something while repeating the same chords over and over. "Just to make Jeff smile I sang 'She's a good girl, loves her mama' and from there I wrote the first and second verses completely spontaneously." It shows that there really can b any meaning to the song...the lyrics came completely spontaneously, they may have no real meaning its just what came out. Also, Axl Rose once asked Tom how he came up with the line about vampires and Tom replied..."When I'm driving, sometimes I see these shadowy-looking people just off the sidewalks, around the post office. I always thought of them as vampires for some reason." I think people just over analyze lyrics sometimes. Alot of times, an artist just writes whatever is in his head, whether it makes sense, has a hidden meaning or whatever. I agree with scooter44, take the song however u want to.

I love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and this is one of thier best songs, but I think it might be the oppisite of what every one has been saying. I think maybe he was a bad boy, and tried to pretend he didn't care about his good girl girl friend. And maybe he did break up with her or cared more about the bad boys then her. But as the song progresses I think he's falling for her, I believe it is a love song, about today's world. It sounds like he belongs to a gang possibly, "the vampires" are his gang. And I think he sees what happens to all the other girls who were dumped by the gang memebers and now he feels bad for breaking up with his girl. Because by the end, he professes his love for her, "I wanna write ypour name in the sky" I take that as the biggest thing a guy can do for his girl, show her and everyone how much you care for her by writing the name in the sky everyone will see it. That's just my theory, I don't think there is a right answer songs are made for people to interrupt and as stated before most of the TP & HB's song are about drugs.
