Subject: CHORDS: Dirt by Phish

Dirt, by Phish

A really beautiful live song...

Most of the song is this:

D Am C G
I wanna live beneath the dirt...

these are the verse chords.

the one place where the chords change...you know what I mean.

E C D

(i'm not sure what that first chord is, help me out!)

then Trey's little solo, which is based around:

----------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------|
--14 14 14 14 12 11 12 14---------------------|
----------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------|

--------------------------------------------------|
--------------------------------------------------|
--12/14 12 11 14 12 11--------12 11------12 11----|
----------------------12 12 12----- 12 12-----12--|
--------------------------------------------------|
--------------------------------------------------|

-17 17 17 17 15 14 15 17---------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|

-17 15 14 17 15 14 ---------15 14 ------15 14 -----|
-------------------15 15 15 ------15 15 ------15---|
---------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|
---------------------------------------------------|

So there it is...if you figure out what that chord is that I mentioned, or

I never even thought about death for this song. To me, it always seemed like a song about deep depression. You want to just stay away from the world, and you don't want to go anywhere or do anything. Down in the dirt you can't be affected by anyone.

i was just thinking the same thing... not so much a want to be dead, but expressing no fear of death.

I really doubt this song is about death. Mainly because he says "A tiny hole to move and breathe is all that I would ever need." Why would he need to breathe if he was dead? Think about it. It seems more like it's about living a life of peaceful seclusion. I don't even see this song as being "depressing" like most people do. It's actually a very uplifting message when you think about it.

lindyswingster the exact same thing happened to me. i think that the lyrics appear to be more about death then the song because it has such a peaceful tune

I've always thought it was more about living like a bug, beneath the dirt. living so peaceful, no worries. and the memories people have of you when you've gone to live peacefully alone.

after reading the pharmers almanac...publiahed by phish, i am glad to say it isnt about death....it is about getting away from the freansy which is the world...as seen with Where I'd be free from push and shove like all those swarming up above...but the whole death thing is a valid point for all u people who drink the bong water

Well...I was listening to this song with my brother, and he told me that they wrote this song for a friend who had just recently died, and it was all about how they missed him so much that they wanted to go "live" with him beneath the dirt...which is awesome and shows true devotion to a friend. But I think that songs/poetry are written for everyone and supposed to be taken the way that the reader interprets it...

I dont think this song is really about death, I always thought this song was about being fed up with every one around you and being tired of the "push and shove" of life, and kind of wanting to just crawl into a hole and live in peaceful solitude, although there would be someone you would leave behind and you would hope that they would remember you and not forget about you and think about you from time to time because you would think of them often.. wow run on sentence. but those are my thoughts on this wonderful song:)

I had this song up as an away message earlier, and my friend IMed me and asked me if this meant I wanted to be dead...I hadn't thought of this song in that way, but it kinda works...either way though, it's still one of my favorite bittersweet love songs
