Ahh, what a beautiful song. I just had to learn how to play it. Here's
what I wound up with:
Strange Design
--------------
B Em C D
I'm needing
G D
less restraint before
B Em C D
I'm needing
G
to hit the lights and close the door
D Em C D
I'm fine, I'm fine, 'cause I'm...
CHORUS:
G Am
Dripping in a strange design
Bm C
none is yours and far less mine
G Am
hold the wheel, read the sign
Bm C
keep the tires off the line
G Am
just relax you're doing fine
Bm C
swimming in this real thing
Am
I call a life, but can I bring
C D G
a few companions on this ride?
[Second verse, same chords as before:]
I'm feeling my heart's not beating anymore
I'm feeling it's all right this happened once before
I'm fine, I'm fine, 'cause I'm...
[Back to the chorus]
That's it. Pretty simple, lots of fun to play. Enjoy!

| 65 Phish shows and 13 years later, I just found out that it's "real thing" and not "river". Too bad, I like river better. Again, I like to think Trey is talking to us, the crowd. Could be just about life, like Guyute said. Life is tough, but your doin fine. I also think it could have to do with a bad acid trip. Just hold on... it's happened before... just try to relax and enjoy. Hey you never know. | |

| Some things are not meant to be explained in words. I think when we hear this song we understand what it means. It is about life, but I think it is pointing at something I cannot describe. | |
