Tabber: Gaz Hughes
Artist: Pink Floyd
Song: Learning to Fly
Album: A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987)

Now this song is actually layer upon layer of different sounds, and very eighties sounding
it is; however, strip it down and you see that it’s actually just based around basic
open chords. It’s amazing what people can come up with from the same chords people
use every day!

Intro/Verse

This actually excluding the riff is just G and then E minor. Once you know the rhythm,
it’s fairly easy.

G
Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Emin
Stretched to the point of no turning back
G
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Emin
Standing alone my senses reeled

Riff:

E |-10s12-12-12-12s10-|
B |-12s14-14-14-14s12-|
G |-------------------|
D |-------------------|
A |-------------------|
E |-------------------|

Chorus 1
C Amin
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
F C D
Tongue tied and twisted just an earthbound misfit, I

Verse

Chorus 2
C Amin
A soul in tension that’s learning to fly
F C
Condition grounded but determined to try
C Amin
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
F C D
Tongue tied and twisted just an earthbound misfit, I

I’ve not tabbed the solos yet, unfortunately, I’ll do that later.

I heard another version which states that it was Nick Mason who got the pilot license. The conversation in the song (after about two minutes into the song) really happened between Nick Mason, Gilmour (co-pilot) and tower on Mason's first flight. "Friction lock - set. Mixture - rich Propellors - fully forward Flaps - set - 10 degrees Engine guages and suction - check Mixture set to maximum percent - recheck Flight instruments... Altimeters - check both (grabled word) - on Navigation lights - on Strobes - on (to tower): Confirm 3-8-Echo ready for departure (tower): Hello again, this is now 129.4 (to tower): 129.4. It's to go. (tower): You may commence your takeoff, winds over 10 knots. (to tower): 3-8-Echo Easy on the brakes. Take it easy. Its gonna roll this time. Just hand the power gradually, and it..."

Anyone who has flown a plane, and surrended to the pure sensation of flight will know exactly what this song is about. It is hard to explain, but to some people, it is a life changing experience... Also an excellent track to chorograph aircraft aerobatics and displays to. I have seen a De Havilland Vampire do a display to this track, and it was extrememly befitting, as the aircraft did it's display, catching the setting dusky evening sun off it's polished skin as it did it's rolls and loops....

Although it might have been written simply because they got their licenses-it has a little more meaning to me. I feel like it's about the pay-off when you've tried hard for something, and everyone is trying to drag you down. --A soul in tension that's learning to fly/Condition grounded but determined to try. Metaphors aplenty.

Thats probably true and all. But when he got up there to fly, that is what inspired the writing of the song, not the getting the license. I think that he was up there, looking down and just had his eyes opened to a whole new perspective and he realized that quite possibly he himself was learning to fly not in the sense of getting in a plane and taking off, but as in how he feels about life.

While I don't like the industrial sonding '80's drums' I think it's a pretty good song. Very well written and intelligent lyrics. Great guitar as well, Davild Gilmour = Guitar god.
