intro (play each chord for 4 bars):
OK! I have finally unlocked the mystery of the acoustic intro to this
song! It is tuned down a WHOLE step and played in E minor, so it sounds
like D minor. The real way David Gilmour played the four intro chords is
like this:
Em9 Cadd4 Bsus2 Bbsus2
1---2-----0-----0-----0--|
2---3-----1-----2-----1--|
3---0-----0-----4-----3--|
4---2-----3-----4-----3--|
5---------3-----2-----1--|
6------------------------|
Of course, no one wants to tune down a whole step just for the first few
minutes of the song, so I invented a way to play it in standard tuning.
The chords are shown above, but for a recap here they are:
Dm9 Bbadd4 Asus2 Absus2
1---------1--------------|
2---5-----3--------------|
3---5-----3-----7-----7--|
4---3-----1-----7-----6--|
5---5-----1-----7-----6--|
6---------------5-----4--|
Try it! It really works.

they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in

| It's basicly about life, the animal farm thing sounds right too, but to me It's someone who was in a criminal enterprise and as they got older everything went downhill and they realized it was all a mistake. It's a good metaphor to use dogs because they're most like men.We can be trained, broken down,we always seek a position of dominance, we want to feel safe even if in reality we aren't. I love the music, great distortion in the multiple solos, the song really is one you should listen to when you are doing nothing but relaxing because you just sink into it, you get in sync with the mood it creates. I really like how Floyd gives you life advice with songs like these | |

| yeah, the song discusses survival of the fittest, but it's only really describing what "dogs" do to survive in the world. try looking deeper than that. as i've heard from numerous sources here and there, i agree with what they've said. animals is basically(this album is NOT basic, i am merely conveying it's message in a nutshell) saying that humans, when studied and looked at based upon their behavorial patterns, can be divided into groups of dogs, pigs(three different ones) and sheep, all of which are worthless; this can be seen based on the directions we are taking as people of a whole. we(in general) destroy the environment in which we live, war with each other which brings NO positive when looking at the big picture and huddle into little factions, nations and states rather than uniting as one. it could all be different and the course we've taken cannot be changed, but perhaps altered in the future direction in which we head. -peace | |

| I always thought of dogs as blue collar workers, who were used by "pigs". Dogs just did what they were told. Basically did more work then they were paid for. That's my take on it anyway. | |

| I think the song is about survival. You have to be constantly watching your back because people will lie and scheme to get what they want in this competitive society. And you have to be willing to do a little of lying and scheming yourself if you want to survive. Kinda like the "survival of the fittest" theorey. But in the end, regardless of what you do or who you are, we will all be affected by the decisions we make and will all have to "reap the harvest we have sown." This is by far my FAVORITE Pink Floyd song. | |
