Who sang this song; it sounds nothing like Waters? If it is Waters, then thanks for correcting me. And one more lyrical correction: "too many HELL fires burning" And I never said the album was depressing, because I like Pink Floyd for their dark nature (though my favorite is Meddle, one of their lightest). I personally think the album is (as a general rule) lyrical genius, and slightly below par musically. But as a tribute to how good it is, I will just say that I'm listening to it now, despite the fact that I have Medlle, Darkside, WYWH, Animals, The Wall, Relics, Atom Heart Mother, Ummagumma, etc. sitting right beside me. I actually wrote a series of poems inspired by this album (an excerpt of one of them can be found on the Seabirds page, though it has since been revised). A most excellent album, in case I created any confusion.

i do have one question about this song that noone else seems to know... when roger comes back on with the fifth verse, what does he say after "i used to read books but...". it sounds something like "he caught fishing jacks". i know that's not what it is but thats what it sounds like.

Another reason I think this is because the singer sounds vicious and driven. Lower class people are usually pretty broken and pathetic- or at least they are Roger's world -think "Sheep", then compare the guy in this song to the guy in "Dogs"..pretty similar right? Both corporate types.

The Final Cut is such a depressing album. I normally don't like cursing in songs, but this an exception. This is an awesome song, so... powerful. Anyways, this does seem to be about the lower and middle class workers' lives. John would be just your average worker and the ones saying "not now John" are the upper class that don't care about what happens to John in the least.

I hear a lot of people bashing The Final Cut. You say it's too depressing, I say it's brilliant. It really shows the desperation of Roger Waters. Even if it is really Waters' solo album, (seeing as none of the other members really did much) it is great. The album shows desperation in its purest form. This song is sort of like "The Trial" from the Wall. It is the exact oposite of what Waters' actually believes. I love the absolute insanity near the end with the French and all. And no, inpraiseoffolly, Gilmour never sang leading vocals in the Cut.

Thanks WorkingClassLoser. Makes sense I suppose. It is quite irritating that I have so many questions about probably the least commented Pink Floyd album on this site; months pass before you hear anything sometimes. I might start going out instead! Hmm...

Honestly now, this is just excessive use of profanity. I liked Pink Floyd when they wrote intelligent lyrics, rather than crap like this. That means almost every song except this one at least earns my respect, whether I like it or not. This songs brings down a perfectly good album. This is the only scathing review I have ever given a Pink Floyd song, which shows that I am not biased against them. I like this album as a whole, except for this song. But honestly, let's get serious. This song simply sucks. Feel free to attack me now, but I feel this song has worked to attempt to lower PF to the ranks of rappers who can only sing by cursing every second and talking about how many 10 year olds they've raped. At least this song has a decent moral, however poorly it expresses it.

I think the song is deliberately meant to stand out from the rest of the album. The whole of TFC is very anti-war and melodic whereas this gives a big, thumping rock tune. "we showed argentina now let's go and show these" The music and lyrics contrast with the rest of TFC.
