SAVE THE CHILDREN!!!! Really, this is just a post- Live Aid feed the children song. The music is great, but the words are simple enough. Not a bad song, just cliche.

I just thought I'd note that the guitar solo David does on this song is quite possibly the greatest guitar solo I have ever heard in my life. It completely rocks my world. I now want to buy a guitar and keep on practicing so I can learn how to play this solo...among many other floyd songs that is. David Gilmour is now my favorite guitarist. Could be the best band ever. I also can't leave out the fact that it's not just the guitar solo that makes it so phenominal but the entire band as a whole the drums are raging throughout the solo, so are the background vocals. It's just amazing.

I enjoy every PF album except this one and Division Bell, and I'm trying to teach myself to like them (I haven't given them much of a chance yet) starting with this song. It sounds pretty good so far. 4 stars. This poem is called: En Masse But the pigs in command They have other plans They rule with an iron hand They say to their brothers all animals are equal but some more than others And it worked without fail and the roses for Stalin kept coming through the mail And floydfanatic18 and Hellequin, that song will stay with me for the rest of my life as well.

In my opinion, this is the worse track on AMLOR. Please don't ask me why... I think because it just didn't grow on me... The ending solo didn't, either.

This is probably the best 'post-waters' Floyd song there is. Love when it switches from acoustic to electric, just a haunting song that kinda stays with you.

I usually just lurk in this site, but I had to log in and add to what K-Wise wrote... as a guitar player myself, i gotta say that Gilmour's solo at the end of this track is one that can actually move me to tears. Along with Comfortably Numb the guitar work here is among his best, and that's saying a lot. He's one of my main influences. He can say so much with just a few well-chosen notes!

I have listened to this song about ten times each of the last few days, and I still can't get the image of the girl out of my head. Five star song, easily the best after Waters left. I like th e Momentary Lapse album mostly because of this song.

this is one of the most powerful and beautiful songs there is. the intro is so stirring, so moving, and the lyrics are brilliant and passionate. we can't idly ignore the pains that others are suffering, it's our duty to help them and not turn away.

floydfanatic18 that story will stay with me for the rest of my life. This is one of the only songs that has ever moved me. I think this so often about the world and myself. I can remedy myself but what can I do about the world? Except watch as the degradation of modern society wears away our moral fibers and ties to each other.

This is an interesting song. It effects people really enormously. The picture that Storm Thorgerson published for it was of people with their, assumably, lovers, meeting or parting at a train station, they are kissing or holding eachother but are holding mirrors and looking at themselves, the perfect depiction of narcicism. This song is about how people fail to notice what is all around them because of how preoccupied they are with themselves... it reminds me of how, once, near my place, a young lass got off the bus one cold-enough afternoon, the bus driver closed the doors and caught her scarf in them. He hadn't noticed it at all, concentrating solely on the road or his next drop off. She was dragged nearly half a mile. My half-brother's dad was a paramedic that arrived at the scene, and when he went to lift her head up from the back of her skull in an attempt to resucitate her, his hand went through her head and brains to just behind her forehead. He listened to this song in the dark after that incident for a full day, it seems kind of fitting, doesn't it?

Pink Floyd is awesome. They're musical geniuses. Their songs are like poetry set to music. I think this is one of their most powerful songs. I agree with ramthar on the meaning of this song. We can't just turn away from other's problems, 'cause, when it all boils down, they're all of our problems.

I wouldn't quite go top ten, but top twenty is reasonable. That would, let's see, put it in my top 25 songs of all time. Kinda sad really, but is it my fault that Pink Floyd was so much better than everyone else.

A beautiful song; solid proof that Waters wasn't the only songwriter in Pink Floyd. This is one of the most inspirational songs I've ever heard, really. The last stanza brings it all together, a call-to-arms of sorts. In fact, this would've been the most appropriate song for the Floyd to sing at Live 8. It completely encompasses the megashow's goal: to get people aware of the world's suffering that we seem not to notice.

Gilmour's voice is awesome. It's a shame Roger Waters is often thought of as "Pink Floyd" and that when he left the band was not what it once was. Floyd may not have been at 100% strength without Waters, but by no means did they struggle to carry their legacy. Gilmour rocks and this song is one of the top 10 Floyd songs of all the albums.

'On The Turning Away' is phenomenal-- one of the few songs I could listen to over and over again. It makes me feel empowered to help others, and I feel blessed for the things I have and the people in my life. Isn't it amazing how one song can make you feel so wonderful?

On the PULSE DVD there's a cool feature called "bootlegging the bootleggers" (a bunch of bootleg floyd concert vids that they collected and stuck on the dvd... way cool). One of the tracks is On the Turning Away. The quality is great and Gilmour puts so much emotion into the vocals and his kick-ass solo at the end... when my girlfriend and i watched it together, she burst into tears. It was THAT powerful.
