Hey you,
did you ever realize
what you had become?

I thought of you
And the years and all the sadness fell away from me.

I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes.

Thats pretty much the whole shabang, for those of you who are
way to lazy to d-tune your guitars, but want to impress you freinds with
this into anyway, you can play it by starting the same way up on
the 9th fret, 3rd smallest string, and it will sound good, but you
won't be able to play fig 1 and fig 2 without d-tuning.

If there's anything in this song i missed, i'll tab it all later,
but right now I gotta order some pizza.

c-ya, and don't be afraid to email.

Poles Apart - Pink Floyd
typed by Steve Vetter

Did you know...it was all going to go so wrong for you
And did you see that it was all going to be so right for me
Why did we tell you then
You were always the golden boy then
And that you'd never lose that light in your eyes

Hey you...did you ever realize what you'd become
And did you see that it wasn't only me that you were running from
Did you know all the time but it never bothered you anyway
Leading the blind while I stared out the steel in your eyes

The rain fell slow, down all the roofs of uncertainty
I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me
And did you know...

I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes

the first verse is definitely referring to syd coz i don't think gilmour would ever call waters 'golden boy'. besides, syd was the golden boy of the band as he kinda started it and was the creative genius behind it in the beginning and later he was the source of inspiration. as for the second verse, i'm not too sure if it refers to waters or not. i dunno whether he means that waters is leading the blind because, that doesn't make sense. when he was in the band, they were at the peak of their success. i dunno, i'm totally conused after the 1st verse. the last part might mean that gilmour is totally uncertain abt his feelings becoz well... after waters left the band they did get the freedom but it was never the same again. he's not sure if it was good or not. but he does acknowledge that the best times was when waters was there. any suggestions, anyone??

I think most of the songs on "The Division Bell" are specifically about the band or can at least be easily applied to the band.

"Poles Apart" is an appropiat song of lyric that should be placed after "What do you want from me?". As i know Pink Floyd always makes a sequence of songs in their every album. and as i think, like every album Division Bell also contains a sequensial meanings of songs. i have read others comments about "Poles Apart" and everybody thinks the song about Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. and only one of them thinks that it may be only Syd not Roger. But i have a different thought about this song. I would like to share it with u. Ok, try to start at first. first two lines...says about only two persons..'ME' and 'YOU'. and two things...'WRONG' and 'RIGHT'. suppose 'ME' standing for writer own..but what about 'YOU'. if 'YOU' means the listener then..how could writer knows..it was all going to go so wrong for him. as it seems to me...that 'YOU' also standing for writer own.... there are two diffrent heads of human. one is who leads the life, faces the reality, communicate with people, faces happiness, sadness and other feelings..and most of all the outside of him, what people can see. And the other part is may be the thoughts, dreams, wish, hopes or the things that human always thinking positively, the inside of us. and now the rest of three lines of 1st verse may be clear for you. 'ME' says YOU that...if you loose, you must be win next.if something going to wrong for you...you must can make it right..cause you are the Golden Boy..and you'd never lose light in your eyes. and you have thoughts and dream of yours. and about....2nd verse its quite hard to describe. its all about feeling. try to use your heart..not head. ok.....human mind cant understand own nature. most of the time he cant understand his positions or where he exist. thats why, 'ME' says.. it wasn't only him that 'YOU' were try to find out. there is something more he wanted. human mind always wants to exceed his dreams and hopes. but dreams cant be true all the time...thats why 'ME' can get those thing what 'YOU' can't. and the last verse.....the line.. "I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me" is my favourite part of this song. ok...like the uncertainty of falling rain in every roof...our inside cant be say everything truely...missing parts always creats. and now...'ME' says to 'YOU'...'ME' thought about him and his past years what he suffered for 'ME'...coz 'ME' dreamed about somethings and 'YOU' cant get it......'ME' can understand and feel that sufferings and sadness of 'YOURS'. coz....here 'ME' and 'YOU' are the same person... and our dreams and hopes always try to make us happy, piecefull and win. This song is written by David Gilmour with his wife Polly Samson(not sure)who is a psychologist(not sure). I cant say...my thoughts are right. coz i am not form Pink Floyd. I am just a Floydian.

All said and done, this is exactly why I adore David Gilmour: "Did you know... it was all going to go so wrong for you And did you see it was all going to be so right for me " Since Waters was not on this album, he could have had his way just glorified himself, but instead he brought the real deal to light. Syd's breakdown was the only reason Gilmour was called into the band, and Gilmour has no hesitation in admitting that. He is a as much as a great man as he is a guitarist and singer. Hope he never stops playing...

this song is quite simple to figure out really. the first verse is about syd and how it was still fun to play and how that he misses him. then it breaks to the second verse about waters, saying hey its gone to your head and i cant take this anymore. then it goes back to syd, " i thought of you, and the years and all of the sadness fell away from me"

Acoording to Polly Samson who helped write the lyrics, the first part of the song is about Syd Barret and the second part is about Roger Waters

First part is Syd, second part is Roger, however the third part is leading to some confusion above. I personally think it's addressed to the band itself. No matter how many bad things happened to the band, Gilmour still overall enjoys being a part of it, and the last line is him saying goodbye to it.

Polly co-write this song so if she says its about Syd and Roger then its about Syd and Roger. And David wasnt just Syds replacment, they were good friends, he even taught Syd a thing or two on the guitar when they were young. And was the only one out of Floyd who acually kept in touch with Syd after he left Floyd. AND!!! Produced Syds first solo album.

The album, and this song, deal with communication, or lack there of. The first part is about Syd and the second deals with Waters. Great song.

I think it is about love for a woman, excuse I differ from all the previous comments :) It does link to 'What do you want from me' and 'Coming Back to Life" ..and probably to more from the album. The only flaw here is in the first verse "boy" (obviously not a woman)...hard to fix it eloquently in the meaning...

Ereinion, I think he was referring to the band as "blind" because the golden age was all Waters. Dark Side, WYWH, Animals, and The Wall were all his. The band members during that time are described as non-influential to albums, except for Gilmour, of course. At least that's what I think. :)

I think, like some of you, that this references both Barret and Waters, and how different they were in both their running of the band and their personality. The first stanza seems to be about Barret, and the econd seems to be about Waters. What gets me is the third stanza. It's pure poetry; I only wish I knew who the "you" was. I think it's targeted for both Barrett and Waters. Both "And that you'd never lose that light in your eyes" and "Leading the blind while I stared out the steel in your eyes" show how they lost that lust that propelled the band... which led to the las tline "I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes." I'm open for suggestions. I think I have the first stanza figured out, but the second and third stanzas are confusing me right now. Any ideas?

Definitely what's been mentioned before, first half about Barret, his golden attributes and importance to the band and after he was gone, an enduring source for inspiration. Second, obviously he's singing out to Waters. I love this song in that it brings an imensely deep emotional closure to what seems decades of brokenness between Gilmour and Waters. This is my favorite Pink Floyd song of all time, and it didn't take many listens or other's opinions to get what this song was intended for. Plus there is the amazing quality that this song can apply to many people and things, really: using that strong emotion as a foundation. The guitar solo melts anything it touches, also.

i think that this song is about waters and not syd. I think of the "golden boy" part as sarcasm, and that he thinks waters was the one all the fans payed attention to. I think that when he says " why did we always tell you that you that you would never lose that light in your eyes" means because everyone knew the wall, the dark side of the moon, and animals, were mostly written by waters, that he let it go to his head and think he was better than everyone else in the band. the second stanza I think is about how he thought he was in control of the band and the leader and making everyone else in the band feel like crap, but waters just wanted more success and didn't care, I think the last part means even though he's pissed at waters, the years he was in the band still were some of the best years of gilmours life. The very last line means to me that gilmour loved waters, and looked up to him a lot.

FWIW, Gilmour said in an interview that while a lot of the songs on the Divison Bell can be viewed as being about the band, they aren't necessarily specific to Floyd. They are more about the lack of communication in today's society. That said, when I hear these songs I can't help but think they are about the band.

While the idea that the song is about Roger and Gilmour is posible, I disagree. As a few people mentioned, 'the division bell' has a central theme, like all of pink floyd's later work. The theme is the lack of communication between people that causes them to slowly drift apart. However, i still haven't figured out exactly how this song fits in to the theme, i don't really think it has anything to do with waters OR gilmour.

Strange that Gilmour would write a song like this, considering that he was Syd's replacement so a song in dedication to him is a little odd. I agree. I think part of it is Syd and part of it is Roger. But to the person who said Dave would never call Roger "golden boy"-two things are possible. 1) it could be sarcasm. Yeah, right, Roger's "golden boy", says Gilmour. 2) it does say "Why did they tell you that you were always the golden boy". This could refer to the fans only following Roger.
