Dm
The Lord is my shepherd
I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green
He leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives
He releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places

Am
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo he hath great power and great hunger

C Bm
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection and great dedication

C
Master the art of karate

Am
Lo we shall rise up
And then we'll make the buggers eyes water

Em Am Em
Bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream_____

Wave upon wave of demented avengers
Am Em
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream_____
F#7
Have you heard the news
A
The dogs are dead
F#7
You better stay home and do as you're told
A
Get out of the road if you want to grow old

Mmm...I think it's undeniable that, like most Pink Floyd, Sheep is a smidge too vauge to easily and simply define. Also, like most Pink Floyd, it's easy to interpret it in many ways. Regardless, I'd be willing to accept that it was based on the idea of 'lesser' creatures rebelling against their opressors. Perhaps (looking at the album booklet) unions fighting against opressive work conditions? Can't say I'm an expert on English factory conditions circa 1977. --sk

"Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity unto the dream." I think that is one of the most tragic lines I've heard in a song.

During the initial sublimial message you can hear German chants of "heil hitlar". It would fit in with the song so I think it's there.

I think anybody who has read, "The Animal Farm" & has heard this song would certainly draw an analogy between their themes. But, I wouldn't say that they are exactly the same. In the song, "sheep" are certainly alluded to the commonality who are complacent and smug asthough, "everybody's business is nobody's business". And when things come to a head' they pay a greater price than what they would have if they had acted sooner. I can explain the song in three stages. Firstly, the sheep (the commonality) are complacent and inifferent when the storm is gathering. Secondly, things have come to a head and they can no longer ignore it. They fight their opressors, and pay a great price in exchange for freedom or (in undoing whatever wrong that was meted out to them). Thirdly, they again become dormant and start living smugly not having learnt a lesson. I think both Orwell's Animal Farm & this song speak of history repeating itself & one oppressor replacing another. I think, "The Animal Farm", is the bible of Politics.

I read that waters basically took over on this album and modeled after Animal Farm as mentioned(link to the novel http://www.ddc.net/ygg/etext/animal.htm). The pigs are the bosses, the dogs their protectors and the sheep represent the mindless masses(or commoners likes us) !!!!

this album is not based around, modeled after, or even inspired by ANIMAL FARM. like dark side of the rainbow (or dark side of oz, whatever you decide to call it) it's just a coincidence. roger waters did notice the similarities, but they were already recording. the subject was pretty much the same. except ANIMAL FARM was, i think, about eastern communism, and ANIMALS was about western capitalism. but the metaphors still apply to all animals.

From what I know this song has to do with the sheep in Animal Farm. I havent read the book but I do believe this is talking about a revolt of the sheep herd. Anyway I do thing this song has one of the best guitar riffs ever.

The rise of the commoners against the dictatorial (is that a word?) tyrants who selfishly take disgusting advantage of the people, to a point that it is anmost like devouring them, while deifying themselves as to justify the horrible acts of injustice they commit every day. The people excitedly take charge against the "Lord" (the deified leaders) as they "march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream", a dream of freedom and equality, with leaders no longer selfishly exploiting the people. Once the people have taken over, they establish a new world order. But, ironically and sadly enough, a NEW tyranny is esablished ("You better stay home and do as you're told, get out of the road if you want to grow old", almost EXACTLY like the situation that they fought so adamantly and sacrificed so much to abolish. A theme is that history repeats itself, be it good or bad... Brilliant...one of the greatest pieces of music of all time.

I agree, SK. The song also suggests that the meek, the sheep in this case, shall inherit the earth (Rush, too).
