Pink Floyd - The Fletcher Memorial Home (Waters)
G C G/B Am
Take all your overgrown infants away, somewhere,
D Bb+ Bm A/C#
And build them a home, a little place of their own.
D Em C D Em7 D/F# G C
The Fletcher Memorial Home for incurable tyrants and kings.
G C G/B Am
And they can appear to themselves every day,
D Bb+ Bm A/B Bm
On closed circuit T.V. to make sure they're still real.
C D Em
It's the only connection they feel.
Cmaj7
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Reagan and Haig,
D
Mr. Begin and friend, Mrs. Thatcher and Paisley,
Cmaj7
Mr. Brezhnev and party, the ghost of McCarthy,
D
The memories of Nixon. And now adding colour,
G D/F# C
A group of anonymous Latin-American meat packing glitterati."
Em D
Did they expect us to treat them with any respect?
G D/F# C
They can polish their medals and sharpen their smiles,
G D/F# C
And amuse themselves playing games for a while.
G D/F# C Em add9
Boom boom, bang bang, lie down you're dead.
G D/F# Em D/F# G D/F# Em D Cmaj7 D
G D/F# C D G D/F# Cmaj7 D G D/F# Cmaj7 Em add9
G C G/B Am
Safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye,
D Bb+ Bm
With their favorite toys, they'll be good girls and boys.
A/C# D Em C D Em7 D/F# G
In the Fletcher Memorial Home for colonial wasters of life and limb.
D/F# C G D/F# C add9
Is everone in? Are you having a nice time?

Now the final solution can be applied.

| You are all missing the last line. It seems Roger is a little conflicted here because he states what would have happened if all the tyrants (save for Hitler) had been thrown into the home and his father had never been sent to war. The "final solution" would have been applied. That, folks, would have been a bad thing. Hitler's final solution would have been disaterous for humanity. Interesting that Roger didn't want Hitler thrown into the home... | |

| I would like to know, does anyone agree with me in that the lyrics are abuse themselves playing games for a while, and not amuse themselves playing games for a while. | |

| This does seem to be about the post-war political figures. I think the "final solution" is just what the political figures are doing to the soldiers they are sending off to war. Giving them death and despair. This is such a beautiful song... I'm always left speechless afterwards. | |

| This is such a cool song. It really is a niche of it's own. I dont know any other song, ever, that is quite as scathing and sarcastic as this, and which takes so much bitter joy in the cruelty it want to lay on those politicians. I love it. | |

| their talking abEugine Mcarthy not paul. Braindamage was right about how Mcarthy and hatred since Eugine Mcarthy is known for his extreme hatred of communists he wantewd the ones in the U.S. incarcerated, the "overgrown infants" are whats being hated in this song. the song could also be talking about hitlers death or concentration camps. with the killing, wasting life and limb, and the final solution Hitler is really showing up here. Overall it talks about hatred in general from Communists to Jews | |

| You have it right regb. Roger is criticizing peace destroyers who then send people to die for their conflicts. The name Fletcher Memorial Home is a very sad origin indeed. The name Fletcher was part of Roger's father's name, full name being Eric Fletcher Waters. These are the kinds of people that sent Roger's father to die out there in the war, people who had nothing to do with the conflict, people who really wanted no part of fighting but were doing it out of duty or whatever else was implanted in their minds by the politicians. These are the people that treat life as something that can easily be tossed aside. Reagan and Haig represent our government, Mr. Begin and friends are Israel, Mrs. Thatcher and Paisley represent Britain, Mr. Brezhnev and party is the former U.S.S.R., McCarthy represents hatred, Nixon represents corruption, and the anonymous latin-american meat packing glitterati represent Venezuela. | |
