Pink Floyd - The Gnome (Barrett)

D A D C A C A
I want to tell you a story 'bout a little man, if I can,

D A D C A C A
A gnome named Grimble Grumble. And little gnomes stay in their homes,

G D Bb7 C F A7 D
Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine.

D A D C A C A
He wore a scarlet tunic, a bluegreen hood; it looked quite good.

D A D C A C A
He had a big adventure amidst the grass, fresh air at last.

G D Bb7 C F A7 D
Wining, dining, biding his time.

G C/G F A/E E G D G D
And then one day, hooray, another way for gnomes to say, "Hooray!"

D A D C/G A C/G A
Look at the sky; look at the river. Isn't it good?

D A D C/G A C/G A
Look at the sky; look at the river. Isn't it good?

G D Bb7 C F A7 D
Winding, finding places to go.

G C/G F A/E E G D G D
And then one day, hooray, another way for gnomes to say, "Hooray!"

They are the bored, insipid dellusions of a mentally unstable, LSD fried dork. The only "genius" Mr. Barrett possessed was living with him for a few years and named "Roger Waters."

I feel like I really have this one figured out, but right when I start to think that, I hear something that ruins my theory. Anyway, this song does indeed sound incredible when you are smoking weed, and I think the song is about smoking weed. Hear me out though... The gnome's name is Grimble Grumble.... grumble means "To complain in a surly manner; mutter discontentedly" So we've got an angry gnome here. The part where I start to think it's about weed is "admidst the GRASS... FRESH AIR at last." He's still "biding his time" but now it's like "hooray" :) He's happy after that. He's found a new way to say hooray. And all the stoners out there have indeed confirmed that the song sounds stonerific... and if you have ever looked at the sky and the rivers when you are stoned, it is indeed "good" lol Well, you can disagree, but you better have a good theory to disprove this one. If you have a response, send me an IM or an email. Also, if you think you have found a breakthrough interpretation of a Floyd song that you'd like to share, I'd love to hear it. I just read the explanation of "Vera Lynn" from the Wall, and now I think that it is an amazing song, as opposed to before when I thought it was kind of stupid. Have fun with your Floyd everybody... I'm out! :)

this is probably one of the better barret songs...pow r. toc h. was better. maybe i was stoned at the time...yea come to think of it i was. but seriously people...syd blew compared to..well tons of people. the best part about this song would be "Look as the sky. Look at the river. Isn't it gooooood?". makes the song really worth listening to. a song about a gnome...nothing else dubc4life. sorry to shatter ur dreams. its a song about a gnome...thats it. a gnome. no deeper meaning...its about a gnome. its simple...a gnome. its called THE gnome for a reason, and he says "I want to tell you a story about a little man" yea A little man. thats 1 gnome, a certain gnome.

MORE BULLSHIT BARRETT CRAP. God, Im so glad Syd flipped out and fucked off so the real band genius could emerge- (Waters). And all you fucking imbeciles typing and typing about what this song means and finding a billion different meanings from one throw away line are fucking dorks.

This is a good song to listen to when you're on a sweet mellow high. Very happy, cute song, but I can't help feeling like there's more to it. Like we're ALL the gnome or something.....

The first time I heard this song I was convinced that my husband had fallen off the deep end like Old Syd. But then after actually listening to it I learned to enjoy it. I think it's a song about Gnomes, plain & simple. And now that Syd has left this eartly plain we won't ever have the chance to ask him his take on this strange & wonderful song. Blessings Syd. See you again in another life

this is a great song, who else could get away with writing a random song about happy little gnomes. syd was definitely a musical genius. not many can write such a simple song without it being boring

Look at the lyrics again lalalla and then tell me if they arnt embarrassingly simple and vauge. Yes, you could read a lot into them. Just like I could read a lot into an episode of Scooby Doo- but I wouldn't compare scooby doo to say, The Simpsons in terms of social commentry , you understand?

You know werumm, it's great and wonderful that you apparently like Waters better. But some people might not,and might like Syd better, and that's their opinions. Waters is great too, but since Syd made this song, that's why we are talking about him and how he is awesome. So please try not to bash on other's opinions, after all, you would have never even known who Roger Waters was if it wasn't for Syd. [Now I am expecting you to call my a pussy loser and stop being a hippie and being all stupid..and if you do. that's great, I really don't give a rat's ass what you call me, just stop bashin Syd, he's a great man and a hero to lots of people, including myself]

oh and haha on the spelled out thing...yeah that having things "spelled out" is what lyrics with actual CONTENT do. Ever notice how CONTENTLESS lyrics only flash like a floppy supernover in the drugged minds of their listeners? It's clever but it means nothing.
