i agree with rivotskickmyhat, mine sort of borrows bits from yours I think its about a spoiled child, who is oblivious to the world, gos through life shitting on other people to get what he wants - thats the silent reproach of a million tear stained eyes - there silent because his so powerful - saying something would just make him turn on them. i think its a sinical view on modern life that almost anyone has all these people that hate them. and so this guy is skating along, doing his thing, then something gos wrong suddenly - the crack in the ice; and he falls from power, his never been out of controll because his had this sheltered childhood at the beggining of the song, so when he falls his completely out of his depth, and he starts to lose his mind (You slip out of your depth and out of your mind). his trying desperately to hold onto his past power, by clawing at the ice, but his guna fall. i think the ice is also kind of a sinical view at modern life, that its cold and stiff and all that. ang p.s. to say it has no meaning is just dumb, im not a pink floyd expert or anything but i dont think they would have wrote the album for the movie - they made the movie for the album. even if im wrong, the song still has meaning.

Well i think this song refers to the incident on which the whole Wall album concept is based on (when during a concert Roger got mad and spat on a fan). The skater is Roger (or Pink Floyd in general) and the thin ice is their music career. The "dragging behind you the silent reproach of a million tear stained eyes" refers to the fans that 'put their lives' in the hands of the band, that means that they expect too much guideness, dreams etc from the band. The crack on the ice is the incident when Roger spat on a fan and started being alienated from the fans and fellow band members. The 'fear flowing behind you' probably means that he got afraid of the too much responsibility being he had by being the 'spokesman' of all those fans. What do you think?

"if you should go skating on the thin ice of modern life dragging behind you the silent reproach of a million tear stained eyes. dont be surprised when a crack in the ice appears under your feet." i think if you want to understand what that means, then you have to read the second part, dont be surprised when a crack in the ice appears under your feet. by comparing modern life to thin ice it pretty much describes how very fragile living really is. and dragging behind you the silent reproach of A MILLION tear stained eyes is not a good idea, you know on thin ice. i see it more as saying dont take other peoples problems with you in life because there burden will crack the thin ice you are on. anyways. whatever it means it sounds like pure beauty.

i love this song. maybe one of my favorites on the album. it is so sweet and soft at the beginning, and while the melody stays soft, the lyrics become somewhat dark. i love it when that happens.

i think "the thin ice of modern life" part is showing how easy it is to go from being on top of the world and everything going well for you to being nothing a nobody with no were to go nothing to look forward to but thats just my opinion i also think "dont be suprised" is a warning of how easy it can happen. and pink floys lyrics mean different things to everyone so make your own mind up its what it means to you thats important thats whats so great about this band!

One more thing to add, is that that is the literal meaning. Pretty much everything I said could be interpreted as things to happen inside of his head too. Where the crack in the ice is him going crazy and etc.

This is the first chapter in this story, the baby part is in there because the character is being born. The second part is maybe advice about what the character should do with his life, and what not to do. That is basically it, no really deep meaning.

yeah, there's the innocent, unknowing verse at the beginning, followed by the cynical, experienced words of wisdom at the end

I see it as the first part (Gilmour) being Pink's mother. Waters is his father. His father tells him, okay, go do what you like but don't say I didn't warn you. People will watch what you do and make judgements on it (silent reproach). They could weep for you seeing where you go, maybe having been there themselves. He's preparing Pink at a young age to do stuff by himself, because he may not be around forever (he gets killed in the war). Don't be surprised when you fall through the ice and shit goes bad. The rest of the song flows throug there well.

I completely agree. The contrast between the gentle voice of Gilmour and the abrasive voice of Waters works well for the song. But I really don't understand what the "tear stained eyes" and the "thin ice of modern life" alludes to. My best guess is that the water embodies all of the negative outcomes possible in Pink's life, and the "thin ice" is the protectiveness Pink's parents constantly enforce. Perhaps his parents sacrificed their own dreams and aspirations, and that is the cause of the "tear stained eyes." Just guessing.

To me, this is just showing their cynical, pessimistic view of life, saying to younger generations "Go for it, but dont be surprised when life turns bad".
